Last week, UNICEF Global Director, Social Policy and Social Protection Natalia Winder Rossi took part in a side-event at the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development to discuss the impact of climate change on drowning risks.   Every year, drowning claims the lives of 96,000 children and adolescents globally. That’s more than 10 children every hour.   Climate change is leading to children navigating their lives, play and journeys to school in environments more at risk of extreme conditions like flooding and cyclones, whilst heatwaves can cause children to cool off in nearby water which increases the risk of drowning.   UNICEF is working to integrate drowning prevention into our programmatic activities across multiple sectors and includes interventions at daycare centres and schools within communities at the greatest risk from climate change.   Thanks to all those who took part in this important discussion, including RNLI.   #DrowningPrevention #HLPF2024 Image (L to R): Joanne Vincenten, PhD (Health Specialist Child Injury Prevention , UNICEF), H.E. Right now, it can feel like it’s never been harder to raise a young family in the UK. The lack of quality childcare, soaring prices and mounting debt is impacting parents' mental health and placing children's futures at risk. And families on the lowest incomes are struggling the most. Too many are not getting the vital support they need. So today, we’re launching the next phase of our #EarlyMomentsMatter campaign 📣 We are calling on the new Government to deliver a Baby and Toddler Guarantee – so that parents and carers can access the vital services and financial support to help them and their little ones now, and set them up for success in the future. Children can't wait. Sign our petition 👉 https://lnkd.in/egqd2mAT

We’re delighted that our partnership with the Dove Self-Esteem Project has been shortlisted for two Corporate Engagement Awards- ‘Best Educational Programme’ and ‘Most Innovative Collaboration’.   Since 2019, UNICEF and the Dove Self-Esteem Project have partnered to create a world in which young people develop a positive relationship with the way they look, so that they are not held back by appearance related concerns and anxiety. We are proud of our achievements so far, including in India, where we reached more than seven million young people with innovative materials designed to address body confidence issues faced by adolescents and boost self-esteem.   Thank you to Dove for your ongoing support.

Our partnership with AstraZeneca’s Young Health Programme has been shortlisted for a Charity Times Award and a Better Society News National Sustainability Award.   We’re pleased that our partnership, which aims to catalyse a global youth advocacy movement to prevent non-communicable diseases (NCDs), has been nominated for ‘Corporate Social Responsibility Project of the Year’ and for the ‘Education, Training and Communication Award - International‘.   So far together we have reached more than six million young people with NCD prevention messages, we’ve trained more than 241,000 youth advocates, and we’ve shaped 16 laws and policies around the world.   Thank you to AstraZeneca for your ongoing support. The election of the new UK Government and Keir Starmer, provides a crucial opportunity to put children and their rights front and centre of all government decision-making.   We urge the new UK Government to act swiftly and decisively on: - Ending the two-child limit policy and benefits cap, and commit to a national Baby and Toddler Guarantee so that every child in the UK has timely access to the range of financial, health, wellbeing, and development services they need in early childhood.  - Reinstating the UK’s commitment to spend 0.7% of Gross National Income on international aid and deliver a Global Growing Up Promise by investing in health, nutrition, education, and protection from climate change for the world’s poorest children.   The time for action is now. Our children cannot wait any longer for their rights to be protected. Read full UNICEF UK statement to the new UK Government here: https://lnkd.in/eEUR7_zn

Today marks #WorldRefugeeDay, a reminder that children around the world, regardless of where they are from and why they have left their homes, should be treated equally.      We are proud to be one of the humanitarian organisations that our corporate partner, Revolut, is fundraising for. Revolut customers are able to donate via their app to support UNICEF’s work, including our work to protect the rights of displaced children and families.     UNICEF works around the world to help protect the rights of migrant and displaced children. We provide life-saving humanitarian supplies in camps for those who have been displaced. We run child-friendly spaces – safe places where children on the move can play, where mothers can rest and feed their babies in private, where separated families can reunite. We support national and local governments to put in place laws, policies, systems and services that are inclusive of all children and address the specific needs of migrant and displaced children, helping them thrive.    All it takes is a tap in your app to donate. UNICEF tackles diseases head-on, so children can grow up happy, healthy, and able to play.  Football legend Michael Essien is currently at #SoccerAid for UNICEF Training Week, but previously, he visited Liberia to see some of the incredible work being done to vaccinate children against polio in the country.
