  • Implementing Cartographic Standards for the State of Qatar

Worked as part of a team of consultants to implement 5 mapping scales for our client CGIS-MME.

The project began with evaluating the client's requirements upon receipt of the base data, including interviews with stakeholders. Consistent cartographic design was employed for features across all 5 scales while generalisation techniques were used increasingly at smaller scales. Various design options were presented to the client to make a selection.

The project began with evaluating the client's requirements upon receipt of the base data, including interviews with stakeholders. Consistent cartographic design was employed for features across all 5 scales while generalisation techniques were used increasingly at smaller scales. Various design options were presented to the client to make a selection.

The final deliverables included hardcopy designs at 1:5,000, 1:20,000, 1:50,000, 1:100,000 and 1:200,000 scales and delivered as ArcGIS MXDs. Online mapping was generated with a different design to allow CGIS to host the data internally.

Documentation such as Style and Technical guides was created to allow CGIS staff to replicate the design upon receipt of updated datasets from ground or aerial survey.

Dubai is focusing it's efforts on the tourism market and the site of Al Marmoum Conservation Reserve was selected to serve as an ecotourism hotspot. The site is already popular with many birdwatchers and campers.

Working with a remote sensing team and locally based ecologists, I was project manager, liaising with Proteus' client, Dubai Municipality.

All deliverables were derived from newly acquired DigitalGlobe multispectral WorldView imagery, including topographic and terrestrial habitat mapping. Regular site visits were conducted by the ecologists; firstly, to suggest sites suitable for ecotourism, such as bird hides and observation towers, that would allow the public to observe wildlife with minimal impact. Secondly, to serve as ground truthing for the habitat mapping. The habitat mapping was completed using similar categories to the deliverables Proteus provided to Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi in 2015.

The mapping also served as an input to select ecotourism sites through a GIS.

A final report was provided to the client, detailing the flora and fauna and archaeological sites found at the reserve with support to help make this area an important biosphere zone. Proteus also provided input into the design of a proposed Nature and Research Centre.
