Great to see Cornwall Insight's Capacity Market Forecasts in the media this week. Growing a sustainable energy system, delivering lower cost energy, and securing supply, all while some of our current infrastructure is getting closer to retirement will pose significant challenges for the next elected party. Cornwall Insight's analysis predicts that the price paid to generators for supplying additional power during peak demand periods is likely to remain high until the end of the decade. With ageing power plants and the expensive construction of new electricity generation sources, alongside the uncertainty around nuclear plant extensions all cited as key reasons. Is this the green manufacturing report that a future administration might draw upon for UK industrial strategy? This week’s IPPR ‘Manufacturing Matters’ report on the UK’s competitive edge in net zero products that could boost manufacturing and support the energy transition is an important read. But I would argue not just for those with political designs on No 10 and 11 Downing St. It’s one of the few reports that really pinpoints the three green products for the UK to focus on, and the towns and cities across the country that would benefit.   The three priorities are: ➡️ Wind turbines ➡️ Green transport ➡️ Heat pumps The strengths identified by IPPR are spread widely across Great Britain. The North and the Midlands are particularly well-placed to develop all three of these, while other areas including some coastal districts, the South East and part of Scotland and Wales have potential strengths in one or two. I’m heading to UKREiiF next week so would suggest that attending councils, combined authorities, investors, industrial developers, do check out these maps. We are often better placed than we think to maximise opportunities. These industries need political ambition at a local and national level.   They obviously need sites and essential infrastructure too.   What is also refreshing about this report is that it additionally understands that foundational and essential materials like concrete, cement and steel are critical to a net zero economy too.  It’s very easy for the focus to be on an exclusive pursuit of advanced manufacturing.    But if we don’t maximise our homegrown resources and help these essential industries transition to a green economy we will lose jobs that could be green and rely more and more on imports.  Report here: https://lnkd.in/eszfZtUk Good interactive maps on the website too. In this week's ECM Pulse we look at National Grid and its £7bn rights issue and the benefits of getting on the front foot. A rights issue can be a painful process but biting the bullet early saves a lot of pain down the line. The worst case scenario is putting it off until it's too late while the market, and short sellers, start to speculate over your capital position and likelihood of a cash call.
