Why we launched Layer PR? Last month, when we announced the launch of Layer PR and the launch of PR Startup Program (a global dedicated PR initiative for startups and small businesses), many reached out to me asking why there is a need for a program like this and what value it adds, especially when we have a wide range of options to choose from among PR agencies of our choice. Well, I have been working in the news media industry for over 10 years now, and I also engage in investments and business advisory work alongside. Throughout this journey, I have reviewed thousands of business and startup pitch decks, including their financials and the quality of coverage they been receiving over ther years. What I continuously observed was the amount they spend on public relations to make their brands heard by the right audience. - Despite spending over lakhs, or $60K annually, they barely get opportunities to represent their brand on a global scale through the right media coverage, and due to this, sometimes, they even fail to create a good impression in front of their customers and global investors (this is just one example). To be honest, startups and businesses work within a minimum to not-at-par budget so that they can maintain their cash flow and avoid maximum spending which can hurt their financials. - But another issue we noticed was that current PR companies treat them the same as any other client (who are either making millions or listed on the exchange) who have plenty of money to spend on PR. However, if you see the fees startups and small businesses pay to PR agencies are frequently so high that it leads many into cash crunch situations, forcing them to either stop PR activities altogether or engage only when necessary, thus decreasing their exposure to media and audiences. Hence, we saw a need for a program where they can be treated as budding businesses and where we can help them save some money on PR invoices. This could, in turn, help them enhance their customer base, eventually aiding these businesses in growth and revenue generation. Moreover, we noticed some global brands end up paying double by hiring separate PR agencies – one local for national coverage and another international agency for global coverage – leading to unnecessary expenses. There are many more such issues we could discuss, which Layer aimed to address. I had what we call a 'tough customer' in a media training session recently. It was a group session. This person came in about 15 mins after the session had already started and sat down facing away from me. Arms crossed. 😬 This was a very senior person who wasn't thrilled about being there. My gut instinct was that this wasn't about them being concerned or anxious about being put on the spot in a simulated interview. No, this was worse. My sense was that this person felt this session would be boring, basic and a waste of their valuable time. Back in the day, this might have rattled me enough to mess up the whole day. But this would not be my first rodeo. While I was still presenting to the group, I resolved in my mind that my new #1 goal for the day was to win this person over. 20 mins later: Arms no longer crossed. Sitting facing the front of the room. 30 mins later: Commenting on video examples. Asking questions. 4 hours later: Delivered two excellent simulated interviews on a tough topic. 5.5 hours later: Stayed more than an hour after their own interviews were done to watch their colleagues finish their simulated interviews. When we wrapped up the session, there was a round of applause. Guess who was clapping the loudest? 🙂 I'm often asked if I ever get tired of delivering the same media training content day after day after day. My answer after sessions like this? The Secret to Effective Team Communication As a PR and communications professional, I've faced my fair share of communication breakdowns. But over the years, I've learned some valuable lessons on how to communicate effectively with teams and stakeholders. Here are my top tips to avoid communication chaos: 1⃣ Communicate clearly and early enough - no room for misinterpretation, which is bound to happen if you communicate poorly. 2⃣ Communicate through the responsible parties - no bypassing or assumptions(these are deadly). 3⃣ Use all available channels to communicate - don't rely on just one method. Email, WhatsApp, phone calls, Slack or any of the channels you use at work. 4⃣ Vigorous follow-up to ensure no message is missed - persistence is key! Send the email, follow it up with a WhatsApp tag, and a call just to be sure. 5⃣ Actively listen - it's not just about sending messages, but also receiving them! Make those changes and revert as soon as possible to avoid misunderstanding. 6⃣ Follow up one more time to ensure the message has been received - confirmation is key! Still waters run deep. This proverb may sound familiar to many, something we learned growing up. The beauty of this proverb is how relevant it is in the professional world, be it people, practises or purpose. Having spent 22+ years in the corporate world, there is a lot of learning - from successes and failures alike. Having spent innumerable hours with colleagues from different areas, the knowledge and understanding you gain, gives you more clarity, helping you enhance the role of communications and its relevance. This also helps unravel unrealised synergies that are often hidden across and in the depth of an organization. Who says press conferences must be a huge thing? I attended a press conference for the launch of the Berjaya Times Square Tower Run on behalf of PacemakersMy. It was a small setting, more like a mini gathering. Who says press conferences can't be in a small setting? Here are 3 reasons why. 1) Scaling down press conferences will create a more intimate and exclusive event which makes a stronger impact. 2) Smaller, focused sessions will have better crowd control ensuring all attendees receive the attention and information they need. 3) This approach fosters a more personal connection between speakers, key personnel, sponsors, media and attendees by enhancing the quality of interactions and discussions. Of course, this is one of the best cost-saving methods if a company is on a tight budget. I’ve shared previously that I made the leap from the agency world to the corporate sphere in 2018 because I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to be part of PMI’s remarkable transformation. At the time, I was mainly focused on the chance to “unsmoke” the world—consigning cigarettes to the ash heap of history. What I didn’t anticipate is how quickly PMI would progress against its other goals as it works to have a net positive societal impact.   Case in point: Earlier this week, Forbes placed PMI in the no. 1 spot on its Net Zero Leaders ranking. This means it considers PMI the U.S. public company best positioned to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.   This is far from the first eco-recognition my employer has earned, but it really put PMI’s progress into perspective for me. The work we’re doing on what our CEO has called our “path to better” isn’t about PR and perceptions. It’s about numbers and facts. Dig deeper into the impact we’re having on the environment, our communities, and the lives of adults seeking a better alternative to continued cigarette use, and you’ll find we are genuine agents of change. In my role leading Corporate Citizenship at PMI U.S., I’ve been empowered to put what I think of as our “money and muscle” behind causes that matter deeply to us, including supporting military veterans, contributing to women’s empowerment and economic equity, and advancing smart solutions to community issues.   I’ll share more about those initiatives in the coming weeks. For now, I want to send a shout-out to our Chief Sustainability Officer, Jennifer Motles, and her entire team for getting us to this point. I encourage everyone to take a look at the Forbes list and their rationale for putting PMI at the top—including great insights from Jennifer about the competitive advantages that accrue from sustainability leadership.
