Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the Digital Healthcare Show in London, where IBM leaders led an insightful keynote theatre session. The event was an exhilarating whirlwind of inspiring narratives, practical insights, and an infectious atmosphere of energy and connection. Amidst discussions on cutting-edge technologies and their practical implications, the conference's overarching message resonated deeply: at the heart of innovation lies the essence of human connection and relationships. While technology undoubtedly plays a pivotal role, it is the people behind the advancements who are the true agents of change. This conviction fuels my passion for attending conferences like this, where face-to-face interactions provide invaluable opportunities to forge new connections, exchange experiences, and foster collaborations that can spark transformative change. A heartfelt thank you to the event organizers and the dedicated CloserStill Media team for orchestrating an exceptional program and delivering an engaging experience. I'm immensely grateful to the industry experts whose contributions enriched the event. Special appreciation goes to speakers like Kit Lewis and Lucy Marsden who explored enhancing the NHS's digital presence. Kudos to Kerman Jasavala, Dr. Annabelle Painter, Michael Conway, and Dr. Lia Ali for dissecting the potential of Generative AI in healthcare. James Lewis and Chris Clark impressed with their innovative approach to minimizing missed appointments in outpatients using GenAI and process mining. Amber Kennard and Jennifer Basco, MBA illuminated the path for digital workforce transformation. I also want to extend my gratitude to all the brilliant speakers and panellists who graced the digital keynote theatre and various sessions throughout the event. Special mentions to sessions featuring Shruti Patel, Linda Vernon, Hayley Grafton, Shanker Vijayadeva, and Rachael Dovey, where insightful discussions unfolded about clinicians in tech and tangible AI applications in the NHS. Connecting with fellow digital health enthusiasts and legends was undoubtedly a highlight, reaffirming the collective commitment to driving positive change in healthcare. I extend my gratitude to the Frimley NHS trust leadership Daniel Woodruffe and Emma Pownall for granting me the opportunity to attend the Digital Healthcare Show in London. #digitalhealth #healthcare

Generative AI in Healthcare: Hype or Hope? Last week, I had the pleasure of joining Kerman Jasavala, Dr Annabelle Painter, Michael Conway and Dr Lia Ali (Ashlin) for a discussion on the transformative role of Generative AI in healthcare, exploring its potential and challenges. Key Discussion Points: 🟣 Understanding Generative AI: We defined Generative AI and its core technologies, such as transformers and foundation models. A primer on these is here > https://lnkd.in/d32qV-SU 🟣 Potential in Healthcare: Generative AI has significant promise: In clinical use cases like patient triage, diagnosis and decision support, Gen AI is likely to have greater impact in the future. Current applications are more likely in non-clinical areas like productivity and administrative efficiency, where risks are lower and benefits realised more quickly. 🟣 Application Across Functions: Generative AI can improve operational workflows and automate administrative tasks in “middle” and “back office” functions, freeing healthcare providers to focus on patient care. An example is IBM’s initiative to reduce missed outpatient appointments and streamline patient waitlists. More information can be found here > https://lnkd.in/dHDrjPVu 🟣 Harnessing Real-World Evidence: Innovative research methods are necessary to assess AI technologies effectively, moving beyond traditional approaches to more robust design research methodologies. 🟣 Demonstrating Value: Proving Generative AI's value through tangible health economic outcomes and clinical benefits is crucial for its broader adoption. 🟣 Lessons from Other Regulated Industries: Other regulated sectors provide valuable insights that can help shape the deployment of Generative AI in healthcare. Additionally, some universal applications, like talent management and IT modernization, are transferable across industries. 🟣 Navigating Risks: Challenges like AI biases, model hallucinations and ethical concerns require stringent clinical risk management, data stewardship and governance. Multi-disciplinary collaboration is essential in building trust and understanding the limitations of AI. 🟣 Governance and Regulation: The rapid development of AI technology poses challenges for governance and regulation, necessitating a risk-based framework for oversight, as suggested by the EU AI Act. 🟣 Workforce Impact and Skills Development: The profound impact of AI on the healthcare workforce underscores the need for upskilling and clinician involvement in AI development to ensure they understand its capabilities and limitations fully and can influence to its evolution. In conclusion, while Generative AI offers significant opportunities for healthcare, a balanced approach is necessary to maximize its benefits safely and effectively. There is hype, but the hope for its positive impact is strong. #generativeai #healthcare
