Descendants of Black American Civil War Combatants by Drew Gardner 'This series recreates photographs of black American Civil War combatants with their descendants. The project was three years in the making, following comprehensive searches of archives for photographs of black American Civil War soldiers, where the identity of the person in the photograph could be verified. Working with genealogists from Wikitree’s U.S. Black Heritage Project, we traced the descendants of the Civil War combatants and brought them together from all over the United States to be photographed using a period 5x7-inch tintype process in an authentic daylight studio. The sitters had to stay perfectly still, which often meant using a neck brace for exposures of up to 40 seconds. The sitters wore custom, handmade costumes and sets were built especially; some of the props used were authentic Civil War items.' Drew Gardner's series won 3rd Place in the Portraiture category in the Sony World Photography Awards 2024 Professional competition. 💡The 2025 edition of the international photography awards is now open. The Space of Czechoslovakia by Maciej Czarnecki 'This photographic series presents modernist interiors in former Czechoslovakia, capturing the unique heritage of the communist era, which is preserved in the Czech Republic and Slovakia better than anywhere else. The photographs were taken during six trips to both countries, and involved both careful planned and accidentally discovered locations. The series includes several dozen locations, each reflecting the cultural tendency of the inhabitants of the Czech Republic and Slovakia to preserve the original appearance of the interiors. These interiors are saturated with nuances related to space-age architecture, the space race and the Cold War. They reflect the authentic atmosphere of the era, preserving details such as the original furniture, decorations and colours, despite the passage of time. Together they create a unique image of the area’s modernist heritage, which is a testimony to the historical and cultural richness of the Czech Republic and Slovakia.' Maciej Czarnecki's series was shortlisted earlier this year in the Sony World Photography Awards 2024. The 2025 edition is now open!
