Integration of Conservation, Tourism and Local Livelihood Strategies at World Heritage sites after COVID-19 pandemic
Funded by the Government of Japan through the UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust, implementation from 2022 to 2024.
Four World Heritage sites from Asia, Africa, the Arab region and Latin America and the Caribbean work together through a series of pilot cases, to support their communities in transforming their approaches towards livelihoods supported by the ecological, economic and social dynamics of World Heritage sites
The project community strives to design and test replicable strategies and methodologies for integrating heritage preservation into local economic and social lives – bringing profit, creative vibes and social impact all at once. A place-based and sustainable development approach supports local livelihood opportunities in and around World Heritage properties, with enhanced digital presence.
World Heritage signature products are metamorphosed from traditional, authentic designs into products that can be marketed locally and internationally. Sustainable tourism practices and public-private partnerships between site management authorities, businesses and local communities at World Heritage sites are explored based on real-life experience.
