Macon-Bibb, MGSU celebrate veterans

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – “In the war to end all wars, every city and town in America had its favorite company, regiment or division,” said Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert.

Macon was one of them–and its division had some color to it.

“But even closer to the hearts of Macon, was the famous Rainbow Division,” said Reichert.

The Coleman Hill monument recognizes those soldiers who died in the 151st Machine gun battalion–which was a part of the Rainbow Division.

“This monument really was intended not just to celebrate Armistice Day, veterans day, it also calls attention to the men from this area who lost their life,” said Reichert.

The fall colors were bright Friday as more than 50 people celebrated Veterans Day and the monument.

“What we do share together on a day like this–it’s just a great opportunity like I said, for us to sit among the members of the community that we serve,” said Col. Carty. “And for them to come back and say to us that they’re recognizing that service.”

Colonel Bill Carty was out in support of veterans and Middle Georgia State University, who partnered with Macon-Bibb County to put together the wreath laying ceremony.

“It’s a great time for the community to come together to remember that and say thanks for that,” said Col. Carty.

Mayor Robert Reichert and University President Dr. Christopher Blake used the silence to show their support of veterans.

“And the sacrifices of their families as well, who in many cases–in all cases with the families–their loved ones were away serving in war,” said Col. Carty.

There are veterans from all over who have been away, but on Coleman Hill Friday, we recognized them together on their day.

Dr. Blake presented a gift to the crowd to remember those who had died, as well as veterans who have served our country.
