Macon’s Rosa Jackson Community Center to receive renovations

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Rosa Jackson Community Center in Macon to mark the beginning of construction that will see the facility receive much needed upgrades.

“We are improving the quality of life for people in all areas of our community,” Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert said in a news release. “Especially the neighborhood around the Rosa Jackson Community Center.”

Mayor Reichert was on hand as he, and several other government officials, announced the $3.45 million project to renovate the center, which is located on Maynard Street.

“I know they will truly enjoy the gymnasium and rooms,” Reichert continued, “as well as the programs that will be here.”

The upgrades will be financed using money taken from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or SPLOST.

Director of the Macon-Bibb Parks & Recreation Department, Reginald Moore, said it was decided that upgrading the facility was one of the best ways to use the generated tax revenue.

“What we did was met with architects and the community,” Moore said, “to determine what was the best way to spend the money and how we need to spend that money in the best form possible.”

Work slated to be completed on the center will include building a new gymnasium, a new playground, an exercise room, renovations to the existing structure, and a brand new splash pad.
