First edition, second printing, of the author's second mystery. Ellery Queen, the pseudonym created by writers Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee in 1929, "took the intellectual game that was the formal detective novel to greater heights than any American writer" (The Weekly Standard). As Queen, they wrote over 30 novels, edited anthologies of crime fiction and true crime, and founded and edited Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, which has been published continuously from 1941 to the present. The jacket matches the first printing jacket, aside from the inclusion of "second printing" on the lower edge of the front panel, and "by the author of 'THE ROMAN HAT MYSTERY'" at the top of front panel. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles and outline of bookend on spine in black, front lettered in relief on black bookend design, top edge red. With dust jacket. Spine ends very slightly bumped and rubbed, a fine copy, clean and bright, in the bright jacket, a little loss to tips, a few chips and short closed tears to extremities, a few spots of rubbing, remnants of adhesive and very faint soiling to rear panel, still a bright example.

First edition. First edition. Fine, bright copy in a bright, crisp dust jacket that is lightly soiled on the white rear cover and with light professional restoration to the spine ends and extremities. Insp. Queen needed to learn the identity of a man found murdered in a posh hotel. The scene of the crime bordered on the bizarre, with everything in the room turned backwards, including the victim's clothing, the rug was turned upside down, the picture faced the wall. Everything in the room that was movable had been turned backwards! Bourgeau says "one of the trickiest of the early Queen novels. Ellery deals with a locked-room mystery whose solution lies in what today can only be described as a quaint piece of deduction." An attractive copy of an elusive book.

First edition. First edition. Author's sixth mystery novel. Fine, bright copy in dust jacket, with light wear to spine ends and the extremities with a small closed tear and crease to the bottom edge of the front cover. A baffling murder takes place at "The Colosseum" in New York City, during the gala opening performance of the old-timers' Wild West Rodeo. Ellery must solve a crime which could have easily occurred many years ago in the West. He must contend on the one hand with sophisticated New Yorkers, and on the other hand cowboys, cowgirls, bronc-busters, etc. from the West. An attractive copy of this early Queen title.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Water-stained boards on a good square copy happily without any of the foxing usually seen on this elusive title. Better than very good dust jacket is clipped (though not the price), shows only moderate creasing and just three relatively minor chips: two to spine extremities and one to lower rear panel. Book is from library of famed multi-millionaire bibliophile Edward T. (Ned) Guymon, intimate of Dannay & Lee, Hammett, Chandler, Christie, etc., (and the many whom Fred Dannay credits as being his guide & predecessor). On the front pastedown is Guymon's own weirdly fascinating bookplate. Book is a PRESENTATION COPY from Fred Dannay to Guymon's secretary Gertrude Larson, and bears this inscription penned in the bold cursive hand of Dannay: "To / Ned Guymon's / secretary -- / Gertrude Larson -- / with the best wishes / of the author / "Ellery Queen"." A highly fascinating association copy. This is also an advance copy which has the slip laid in. Signed by Author(s).

Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First Edition. -- Condition: Near fine, toning to spine, in near fine dust jacket with short tears to spine ends, some soiling to rear panel, and light rubbing to corners and upper flap fold. -- Details: A nice clean first edition of one of the best Ellery Queen mysteries in which Ellery Queen teams up with the son of a former police colleague, the casework begins with the death of a retired munitions magnate, who dies unexpectedly while sailing his yacht in the Caribbean, and ends up in the search for two missing heiresses. Ellery Queen, and later Barnaby Ross, was the pseudonym shared by the writing team composed of cousins Frederick Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Together, the pair wrote four Drury Lane mystery novels, starring a Shakespearean actor and detective, as well as the Ellery Queen mystery series. The pseudonym pair was all the rage in the 1920s and '30s, with one of the cousins, usually Dannay, donning a mask and appearing in public as Ellery Queen. The cousins carried on a fictional dialogue as Ross and Queen in print and ended the intrigue in 1932 when Ross was revealed to be Ellery Queen. Several years later, when the writers behind the pseudonyms were unmasked, the public was so enamoured of them that their work continued to enjoy great popularity for decades to come. 'After Poe, I think it's true that Ellery Queen was the most significant and important writer of mystery fiction in America.' - Otto Penzler. -- Reference: Reilly, 'Twentieth-Century Crime and Mystery Writers' (1980), 1225.
