"In examining how the United States gained control over the northern borderlands of Spanish America, this work reassesses the diplomacy of President James Madison. Historians have assumed Madison's motive in sending agents into the Spanish borderlands between 1810 and 1813 was to subvert Spanish rule, but J.C.A. Stagg argues that his real intent was to find peaceful and legal resolutions to long-standing disputes over the boundaries of Louisiana at a time when the Spanish-American empire was in the process of dissolution." The 1943 and 1944 yearbooks for Centralia Junior College in Centralia, Washington, a city located along Interstate 5 near the midpoint between Seattle and Portland. The school, which opened in 1925, developed slowly at first, constructing its first physical campus in 1950. As the concluding remarks in the 1943 Yearbook observe, these were produced amidst World War II: "The Yearbook staff has tried to present representative activities of the college year. We found, however, that many activities important in our student life this year hard to portray adequately in pictures. Weekly sales of war stamps and bonds, by-monthly manning of the Observation Post, Red Cross drives and various salvage drives for the war effort were difficult to photograph. The staff hopes, however, that the pictures included in the 1943 Yearbook will serve as reminders of student participation in the activities due to the war as well as those of the regular college year." Produced in-house, each yearbook is illustrated with tipped-in photographs, 90 in the 1943 issue and 72 in the 1944 issue, which is entitled The Trail Blazer after the school's mascot. The administration, classes, dramatic productions, athletics, and social affairs are som of the activities seen in the images. Both yearbooks belonged to Dorothy Mae Rigg (later Collias, 1924-2006), a lifelong Washington State resident. The signature and inscriptions of numerous classmates appear throughout. Unpaginated, with 32 p. and 28 p., respectively. Both are bound with ribbon in blue cardstock wrappers (9" x 11"), with printed black titles on the front panel of the 1944 Yearbook. Some general toning and minor soiling to the wrappers; otherwise very good.

Charming scrapbook of 37 leaves filled with colorful chromolithographic images and some decorative trade cards. It was assembled by Esther Anderson (1871-1958) between 1885 and 1890 while her family was living in Brooklyn, New York, where her father, the Rev. Anders Johan Anderson, was a leader in the Swedish Methodist Episcopal Church. Her location is reflected in the trade cards, such as Purssell, the Broadway baker; Max Stadler & Co., a clothier and hatter also located on Broadway; as well as Seidlitine Seidlitz Powders, which was manufactured by Dundas & Co. of New York City. Anderson included decorative frames for each of the carefully arranged images of children, animals, fruit, flowers, religious symbols, and more. Her first name is spelled out on the first leaf in block letters. A graduate of Brooklyn's Adelphi Academy and Northwestern University of Chicago, Anderson briefly taught high school before joining the Young Women's Christian Association, which she served for three decades at a variety of posts from Detroit to New Zealand. After retiring, she ran a summer camp for girls in Connecticut. Although her last name does not appear in the scrapbook, it was acquired directly from the estate of her family, which supplied the record of ownership. The scrapbook (8" x 9 ") is bound in full blue cloth, with decorative black, silver, and blind stamping, including a rendering of a parrot on the front panel. The contents are a bit toned. The pasted images, which have been glued down, are bright with a few showing some signs of light rubbing. The front hinge is cracked, but overall the scrapbook is quite sound.

Scarce, OCLC locates only five holdings: Allen County Public Library, Mid-Continent Public Library, Omaha Public Library, La Crosse Public Library, and University of Wisconsin, Stout.

Sheet music for the song recorded by the Chicago-based pop group Spanky and Our Gang on Mercury Records. "If you'd take the train with me, uptown to the misery, of ghetto streets in morning light, it's always night, take a window seat, put down your Times, you can read between the lines, just meet the faces that you meet, behind the window's shade". Born and raised in New York City, Scharf (1941-2007) was a prolific studio musician in New York City in the 1960s. He was co-producer of Spanky and Our Gang, which made the song the title song of their second album. The song has been recorded by several musicians over the years from Odetta to Dione Warwick. The New York Urban Coalition adopted the song as their theme song, and New York City Mayor John Lindsay used it as campaign song when he successfully ran for re-election.

  • Seller image for THE GRAY'S HARBOR TOOTHPICK for sale by johnson rare books & archives, ABAA

A black-and-white photograph of the Gray's Harbor Toothpick, a unique exhibit offered by the state of Washington for the 1904 World's Fair held in St. Louis. The "toothpick" began as a 270-foot-tall Drummond Spruce that was growing in a forest near Aberdeen and was estimated to be 440 years old. It was donated by Weyerheauser Timber company. After being moved from the forest, a 38-foot section of the log was hollowed out and mounted on two flat railroad cars. In the hollowed-out trunk an office was set up along with an animal den used to house two Washington bears. Another section of the log was fitted with living accommodations for the people hired to transport it on a tour of the United States with a final stop in St. Louis. The photographer of the 10" x 4" image is unknown. It has remnants of black paper on the verso as if it was removed from an album; otherwise very good.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First Edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by James H. Richardson to Los Angeles advertising executive Earl Culp on the front flyleaf. Octavo: 312 p. Original black cloth binding, with gilt and red titles. Some general edgewear to the boards, and also to the dust jacket, which has been neatly backed with brown paper on the verso; else very good. Considered one of the best memoirs by an American newspaperman, in the same league as H.L. Mencken's Newspaper Days (1941), Irving S. Cobb's Stickfuls (1923), Russell Baker's The Good Times (1989), and Julian Ralph's The Making of a Journalist (1903). Born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Richardson (1894-1963) was hired as a reporter on the Winnipeg Telegram in 1912 after being expelled from high school. His family moved to Los Angeles the following year and he landed a job on the Los Angeles Evening Herald after having the presence of mind to call in an eyewitness account of the deadly collapse of the Long Beach Municipal Auditorium to the city desk. He quickly became a star for the Herald, playing a major role in the downfall of two Los Angeles mayors and stumbling across a murder confession he claims led to the election of Warren Harding as president in 1920 (he tells all these stories here). Named city editor in 1924 - the youngest ever in the Hearst chain - Richardson lasted four years, until his increasing serious drinking got him fired. After a stint as a Hollywood studio press agent, and a near-death experience with alcohol (to which Richardson devotes a surprisingly effective chapter), he quit drinking and eventually was hired as city editor of the Los Angeles Examiner, Hearst's morning newspaper, in 1937. It was the 20 years he spent at the Examiner that cemented his legend as "the last of the terrible men" - a sobriquet from a 1950 magazine profile he happily adopted (Richardson was the inspiration for the protagonist of Harlan Ware's novel Come Fill the Cup (1952), which was made into a movie of the same name starring James Cagney). It was as city editor of the Examiner that Richardson feuded with gangster Bugsy Siegel, helped drive the recall of Mayor Frank Shaw, revealed that the U.S. had detonated a hydrogren bomb in 1952, and dominated coverage of the 1947 Black Dahlia case, perhaps the most infamous murder in Los Angeles history. "Balding, with a lazy eye and a mean temper, he was fiercely competitive with a cruel streak toward lazy and inattentive reporters," Rob Leicester Wagner summed up Richardson in Red Ink, White Lies: The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles Newspapers, 1920-1962 (2000). "He was truly simultaneously hated and admired by his staff, but he still engendered a loyalty not enjoyed by other city editors.".
