Quotations from the rear cover: "One of the more provocative studies of why middle America is making increasing use of ritual healing and what that choice tells us of problems with biomedical care in technological institutions. A welcome addition to anthropological studies of ritual healing in other societies, and it illuminates a huge component of our health care system that is poorly understood." -- Arthur Kleinman, M.D., Harvard University. "An all too rare volume, namely a scholarly work on the practice of healing in suburban or what we might call middle-class America. McGuire, perhaps uniquely, has set out the religious or 'ritual' healing beliefs and practices that are usually strictly segregated and kept apart. Any one who takes seriously the need to understand 'healing'. should obtain this book." -- HEALTH AND HEALING. "Develops an innovative sociological approach to the study of alternative healing practices through a methodologically sound qualitative study. The high quality of research and conceptualization and the meticulous documentation of the relevant literature make [this book] essential reading for those interested in the sociology and anthropology of religion and of medicine, and in the study of health and illness in contemporary America." -- CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGY. "The power of the book is in the larger cultural analysis it offers. a valuable contribution to medical sociology." -- SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS. Keywords: Alternative Medicine . Fourth printing. Paperback. Condition: Fine condition. Second Edition, 1994 (so stated). Los Angeles: Fowler Museum of Cultural History / University of California , 1994. 8.5" wide by 11" tall. A bright, shiny, clean, square, tight copy. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Lavishly illustrated with 2 maps, and 243 photographs, including 161 in full color. Bibliography. English language version of the catalogue of an exhibition at the Fowler Museum of Cultural History. From the foreword: "ROYAL TOMBS OF SIPAN was written to serve as a catalogue for the museum exhibition of the same name. Its primary aim is to provide an account of the discovery, excavation, and current interpretation of the three royal tombs that were scientifically recovered from Sipan between 1987 and 1990. We have tried to relate them to the royal tomb that, so tragically, was looted at Sipan before the archaeological work began, and to demonstrate the value of careful archaeological excavation as opposed to clandestine looting. Although it is hoped that the detailed accounts of the tombs provided here will be useful for scholars, the volume was written primarily for the non-specialist. The story is presented in narrative form, often using phrases like 'we found,' 'we thought,' or 'we realized.' The reader might infer from this that 'we' means simply the authors. But the team was much larger than the authors of this volume, and both responsibility and primary involvement in distinct aspects of the work were often divided. Walter Alva was the archaeologist who directed the excavations at Sipan, assisted by archaeologists Luis Chero and Susana Meneses. Working with a wonderful team of archaeology students from The Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, they discovered all three of the royal tombs at Sipan, and saw to it that each was documented in an exemplary fashion. Christopher Donnan was at Sipan to witness most of the major stages in the excavation, and to discuss the interpretation of the tombs and their contents with the Peruvian archaeologists who excavated them. His primary role was the iconographic analysis -- identifying the tombs' objects and individuals by comparisons with their representation in Moche art, and relating the tombs and their contents to specific aspects of Moche culture. Much of this work was done in the Moche Archive at the University of California in Los Angeles, and involved close collaboration with his research associate, Donna McClelland." Keywords: Precolumbian Art History. Archaeology. South America. Native Americans. . Second Edition, 1994 (so stated). Oversize Softcover. Fine condition. 230pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

From the Preface: "The purpose of this book is to introduce the music of primitive people to students, scholars, and laymen. It is not intended to interest the specialist in non-Western music, who will find little here that is new to him. I have not covered systematically the music of all primitive cultures. It has been my purpose, rather, to show the kinds of phenomena that occur in primitive music, to give examples, and to indicate how they have been studied and to what general conclusions they have led." He discusses such things as the criteria used by natives to determine 'good' singers and songs." Keywords: Ethnomusicology. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. From the publisher: "This collection of essays addresses the lack of shelter -- one of the most basic elements of human adaptation -- now experienced by many Americans. Based on the presupposition that shelter is a basic human right in the world's richest, most advanced nation, the authors of these essays look more closely than others have yet done at the causes of the current low-income housing crisis and homelessness. Ten anthropologists and a mental health worker use participant observation and other ethnographic methods to observe and document the experiential and geographic diversity of U.S. homelessness. Each chapter focuses on a specific geographic area - urban, suburban, or rural - and a specific category of homeless people - families with children, solitary adults, or both. Based on their findings, the authors also present policy recommendations to ameliorate the housing shortage and prevent homelessness at local, state, and federal levels." Bibliography. Index. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Fine condition. xxi, 206pp.

Professional and amateur actors of the working class aesthetically formulate dreams and repressed desires in ludruk plays and present themes which distill dramatic issues in the contemporary, social, economic, and political conflicts of Java proletarians. Fantasy and mockery are focused in two figures, one a seductive, aristocratic transvestite. the other a coarse, lower-class clown. Analyzing the plays, the author shows how dances, songs, propaganda, and melodrama also relate to the contemporary situation." Bound in the original blind-stamped green cloth, decorated in gold on the spine. Keywords: Symbolic anthropology. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. 8vo. xxv, 306pp. .
