Condition: Fine. First Edition. This is copy 4 of 200. Fourteen pieces, including one duplicate, ranging from a mock passport poem to a trio of cardboard coasters. All are enclosed within a printed paper folder with a string tie, and housed in a blue cloth clamshell box with a printed paper title label inset on the front panel. A fine copy. "This book was a collaborative project between the Grandview Hotel Poets and the Gold Quoin Press. Working together, the authors and designers printed and assembled this book at Bradley University's book arts studio. All printing, with one small exception, was done on a Vandercook Universal one and an SP-15 press using photo-polymer plates, pressure printing, collagraph, and wood type. Special thanks to OSP Printing in Bloomington, IL for die-cutting." The contributors include Barbara A. Clevenger, Jannett Highfill, Mark Liebenow, Janeil Page, Thomas Palakeel, Burt Raabe, Elizabeth Klise von Zerneck, Robert Rowe, Sharon Conlee, Joe Fitzanko, Becky Krohe, Kevin McGuire, and Lisa Nelson Raabe. The Grandview Hotel Poets began in 2008, gathering monthly in Peoria to encourage each other's writing and bolster the range and power of their own literary voices. Their first chapbook, Bluffs and Bridges (2011), was followed by this innovative collaboration with Gold Quoin Press, a book arts project at Bradley University. Scarce, OCLC locates only four holdings: Bradley University, Peoria Heights Public Library, Western Illinois, and Lawrence University.

This is number three of seven copies, signed by the artist on the handwritten colophon. OCLC locates no holdings of this title. This artist's book is an early example of Bicknell's work. It was created out of 25 leaves of his own handmade paper, which incorporates natural fibers and seeds, and illustrated with hand-printed color images and words, and bound in rustic thick wooden boards. Bicknell says: "My practice in general explores the book; specifically ideas around a sense of place. The book as a symbol of power and knowledge can be a vehicle to communicate directly; it is a form that is understood in these terms but repositioning its context and purpose challenges these very notions." Bicknell is one of the best-known book artists in the United Kingdom. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the world and acquired by numerous private and public collections including The Bodelian Library, Bibliotheque Nazionale, Florence, Bibliotheque, Paris, The Rijksmuseum, Den Haag, The Victoria and Albert Museum, New York Public Library, and Tate Britain.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Printed on Somerset mould made paper in an edition of 20 (this is number 3), the book measures 20 x 24.5 cm and has 45 pages. Contained in a cloth and paper envelope. Signed by Allix on the colophon. The book is letterpress in two fat face types. The principal typeface is 36pt Braggadocio which was designed in 1930 by W.A.Woolley for the Stephenson Blake type foundry. Some of the letterforms are startling in their weight, brevity, and the use of curve against straight. It is combined with Bodoni Ultra Bold, released in 1928 and designed by Morris Fuller Benton. "This book takes a wry look at seven ladies who are not of the slenderest proportions, accompanied by short quotations by George Eliot, Edith Wharton, and Marilyn Monroe. It also features a moment in the life of Miss Van Eyck where every letter of the alphabet in the typeface celebrated here may be seen. There is little that is straight in the chosen ladies - chosen because drawing a large woman is so much more interesting than drawing a thin one (or indeed, a large man)." - artist statement. The seven prints are made in various ways, which include etching, drypoint, aquatint, chine colle, digital, and lino cut. One title is from a drawing and five pages have collage with the letterpress. Born in England in 1943, Allix studied at the Royal College of Art in the 1960s. She won a Prix de Rome and created her first hand-crafted book in 1973. Her works are held in the collections of The British Library, Yale University, the National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), the Claremont Colleges, the Rochester Institute of Technology, the University of Alberta, as well as other fine public and private collections. OCLC locates seven copies of this title held in special collections, with none in commerce.
