Condition: Very Good. Signed by author Jakob Wassermann on the front free endpaper in blue ink, inscribed in German "fur Paul Berne herzlichst [signed] Jakob Wassermann Hollywood, [illegible] 1927." Paul Bern was the German-born film scenarist for this very novel who signed a contract with Wassermann at a luncheon with his boss at MGM, Irving Thalberg, and others according to a Jewish Daily Bulletin article of April 5, 1927. They write, "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer plans to produce 'The World's Illusion' on a lavish scale. Herr Wassermann is making a tour of the United States before returning to Europe to begin his next novel." Wassermann probably accidentally misspelled Bern's name. Apparently the film was ever made. [vi], 383 pp. Publisher's blue cloth with orange stamping, red topstain. Tenth printing of the first American edition. First volume only; lacking the second volume. Very Good with faint horizontal dampstain to front board, contents slightly toned. Intriguingly another inscription in black ink beneath that in another, very odd hand reads in German "mit [illegible] [illegible] fur [illegible] von Paul Bern Beverly Hills"; it doesn't seem to resemble the examples of Bern's handwriting we could find online-- including the famous suicide note that many believe was not actually his handwriting. Perhaps it was written by an assistant of his or someone on his behalf? Regardless of whomever wrote the second inscription, this is a very interesting signed copy-- likely with an intriguing Hollywood association. Bern's death on September 5, 1932 has been hotly debated for years; he was married to star Jean Harlow at the time. Signed books by Wassermann are uncommon, too.

A great association between playwright Odets, with one of his more difficult plays, and Hollywood actor Fredric March, a major star of his day. Odets' thanking March for his patronage of the experimental Group Theater collective, who put on this play, is a nice bit of Great Depression-era theater context too. Signed letter from the Director of The Limited Editions Club, George Macy, to Mr. L.L. Vance of Minneapolis mounted on rear paste down. In it Macy writes,"Today I am sending you a special copy of Main Street illustrated by Grant Wood. This is because it was your suggestion that we make this book. For some time, we could not remember who did make the suggestion originally; only the other day a member of the staff quite remarkably remembered your name. We would be glad to have your comment on the book." The Monthly Letter of the Limited Editions Club is laid in; in it the brief story of Vance's letter to the publisher that Main Street be illustrated by Grant Wood is relayed. Therein Vance is referred to as "Somebody living in the Middle West," his name being temporarily forgotten. A unique association copy with a serendipitous story.

From the library of Dr. Kurt Enoch (1895-1982), a noted German publisher who co-founding pioneering paperback publishing house Albatross. Forced to flee the Nazis he landed in New York in 1940 and in 1948 co-founded and became President of New American Library (parent company of Signet Books), which became one of the successful and acclaimed post-war publishing houses. He went on to become one of the most highly regarded figures in American publishing. First edition. First edition. Signed by H.T. Tsiang on dedication page, interestingly inscribed "To friend Robert H. Thayer [signed in English and Chinese characters] H.T. Tsiang c/o M. Rosener Troika N.Y. City Feb. 2nd, 1932." Thayer is very likely the lawyer who assisted in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case that transfixed the world, starting in March 1932; he was also future OSS head William "Wild Bill" Donovan's protege according to Lloyd Gardner's book on the Lindbergh case, The Case that Never Dies. If the "M. Rosener" mentioned in the inscription was Morris "Mickey" Rosner, an intelligence-connected gangster who also pops up in the Lindbergh kidnapping case, this is a very intriguing association copy. Rosner would take Thayer around to various underworld haunts, according to Gardner. Tsiang's mention of a "troika" (a tripartite group) of himself and these two figures is also interesting. 158 pp. Bound in publisher's wraps with yapped edges. Good only with chipping along edges, creasing to spine, hinges of wraps fragile. The self-published debut novel of Chinese-American experimental author, left-wing political activist, and Hollywood actor H.T. Tsiang. A noteworthy work of Asian American fiction.

Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Signed by John Cage on verso of front free endpaper. The copy of Ihab Hassan with his signature, as well, to paste down. His marginal brackets and checks occasionally throughout text; a list of his notes with corresponding page numbers is written on rear free endpaper, these notes could be of historical significance. xii, 276 pp. Original cloth. Near Fine in Very Good, slightly rubbed unclipped dust jacket. A great association between two key figures in the aesthetic turn from modernism towards postmodernism-- prolific writer and academic Hassan would in fact coin the term "postmodernism" in a 1971 paper on literature. Composer John Cage and his writings have been widely cited as a "source for postmodern aesthetics" as Nancy Perloff put it; "The Cagian tension between the written score and the variable performance, the resulting paradox that the score is autonomous, without fixed referent, the treatment of composition as process, the expansion of the possibility for multiple signifiers and critical receptions - such ideas propelled the avant-garde to new terrain," i.e. beyond modernism.
