Hardback. Condition: Very near fine. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE. First Edition, First State. A very Near Fine example indeed, tight, square, its gilt titles bright and shining. Written between 1873 and 1884 and published posthumously in 1903, this is regarded by many as the very first 20th century novel. Today considered a literary classic, it is the author's autobiographical account of a harsh upbringing and troubled adulthood and a work which shines a revelatory light on the hypocrisy of a Victorian clerical family's domestic life. It foreshadows the crumbling of 19th century bourgeois ideals in the aftermath of the First World War. This is a remarkably handsome copy, tight and square, topedge gilt. A highly collectible example presented in a custom chemise and three-quarter leather slipcase with raised bands and gilt titles. An excellent presentation of a landmark title, a title listed as Number Twelve on the Random House/Modern Library 100 Best Books of the 20th Century.
