With original illustrations by John Tenniel re-engraved by Frederic Warde and Bruno Rollitz; the first volume is signed at the rear limitation page by Warde. Bound in publisher's original red and blue (respectively) full leather heavily decorated in gilt, with all edges gilt; in publisher's original blue and red cloth slipcases. Near Fine with light rubbing to leather at spine ends and light fading to spine. In Very Good spotted, toned and edge-worn slipcases. A beautiful set.

Bound in publisher's limp vellum, yapped fore-edges. spines lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges of leaves untrimmed. Near Fine with light wear and soiling to vellum, untrimmed edges browning, occasional light foxing but overall quite clean; colophon with offsetting from item previously laid in. Original ties clipped at fore-edges. Bookplates of William Harris Arnold. A lovely Kelmscott printing of the 15th century French courtly romance written by Raoul Lefevre, chaplain to Philip III, Duke of Burgundy. The Caxton translation was first printed by him c.1475, considered the first book printed in the English language. Beautifully decorated with woodcuts designed by William Morris. Morris wrote of it, "The book will be ornamented very richly with woodcut ornaments entirely designed by myself; no labour or expense will be spared on them and there will be much variety in them. The semi-Gothic type designed by me (with special regard to legibility) will appear in this book for the first time." The paper was handmade by James Batchelor, with watermark of a bouquet with Morris's initials. Peterson A8.

    First Edition. First edition of The Macklin Bible, a masterpiece of book design that has been called "the last of the great Bibles." Complete in six volumes. Elephant folios 19" in height, 15.5" in width, spines typically around 2.5". Full red morocco, covers with elaborate gilt borders, spine with double raised bands gilt in seven compartments, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. Sturdy bindings are holding well despite the demands of the heavy textblocks. Very Good, ex-libris from the John Wilson Collection of Multnomah County Library with small bookplates on paste downs, a few penciled notes to versos of title pages but otherwise unmarked. Wide margins. Bindings scuffed and soiled, rubbed along joints, wear at heads and tails. Contents generally bright with typical offsetting from engravings; many tissue guards still present. Handwritten 2pp. 1889 note from London bookseller Henry Sotheran tipped-in to Vol. 1, wherein he apologizes for the lack of The Apocrypha, which was published in 1816. A tremendous, lovely picture book with remarkable full-page engravings, engraved chapter heads, and text in double columns with Roman font, 29 lines to the full column. Very Good+ overall with slight sunning to spines, a few head and tails slightly frayed (especially Printing Plate case and foot of David Copperfield), slight shelf wear, a few spine labels slightly chipped. An attractive set. An attempt by renowned British private press The Nonesuch Press to create the definitive collection of the works of Charles Dickens with their signature fusion of technologies from different eras of publishing, using hand press type and the original printing plates and wood blocks for many of the illustrations herein. The plates and wood blocks were then dispersed one per set, creating a limitation of 877. The pleasant rainbow of colors by the bindings, the thoroughness of the scholarship, etc. made The Nonesuch Dickens an immediate hit with book collectors, and it remains so to this day.

    Condition: Fine. Signed Limited Edition. First illustrated edition. 373 pp. Copy number 1492 of a limited 1,500, signed by Henri Matisse. Bound in publisher's brown cloth stamped in gilt with, top edge speckled brown. Fine, with just the faintest rubbing to the gilt-covered relief on the front cover, in Near Fine publisher's slipcase with slight soiling and slight wear, bubbling to paper on one face. A beautiful copy, in much nicer condition than as normally found. A visually striking production which combines James Joyce's modernist masterpiece with twenty-six illustrations by Matisse, including six hand-printed etchings and twenty lithographs.
