First edition. First edition. viii, 224, [2]pp.Bound in publisher's black wraps with hole-punches. Very Good+, hinge at front cracked but binding holding, light toning with age. One of the more popular survivalist/counterculture works by American writer Kurt Saxon (pen name of Donald E. Sisco), a how to book for home manufacturing of things and general mischief based on 19th century manuals. Saxon is best-known for his book Poor Man's James Bond, a classic in the clandestine how to/ Loompanics sub genre of nonfiction. Journalist Kyle Mizokami wrote on the site War is Boring: "Saxon claimed to have been invited to appear on David Letterman. As Saxon tells it, he volunteered to demonstrate recipes from his book Granddad's Wonderful Book of Chemistry, including the spontaneous combustion of mercury, potassium and sodium, and his 'burning ice cube' trick. Unfortunately, during rehearsals one of his tricks ended with a boom and a producer yelling, 'Am I bleeding? I can't hear. Can I get this stuff off my pants?' Letterman allegedly cancelled Saxon's appearance.".

Condition: Very Good. First Edition. [1961]. No additional printings listed, but recto of rear cover shows a list of publisher's titles dating up until 1961, suggesting either unbound sheets of the first printing were bound into later issue/variant wraps, or possibly this is a later printing. Original pale blue wraps printed in dark blue. Very Good with toning to wraps at spine and edges, light soiling, light wear at joints. Corners bumped. Previous owner name to first page, and ink notations to text to a handful of pages. An attractive copy of Chomsky's first published book, which changed the field of linguistics immensely. First Edition. Volumes 1-9 complete. Bound in publisher's navy cloth, spines stamped in gilt and red. First edition. (First printings with the earlier volumes all lacking additional printing statements and the latter few having complete number lines.) Near Fine overall, a few bookseller pencil notations to prelims but contents free of markings, light wear. Vol. 4 back cloth and vol. 2 front cloth a little stained. Vol. 2 & 6 spines rubbed. Two of the unprinted jackets included, worn. The one and only BAL. Still the standard bibliography for American literature and a necessity for booksellers, even if some of the authors included have become ridiculously obscure with time (unless, for instance, the name Christopher Pearce Cranch rings a bell to you, or Thomas Allibone Janvier, Jones Very, etc.).

Condition: About Very Good. Early American edition. (One of 14 English language editions identified by George Monteiro in his review of the book in Luso-Brazilian Review; perhaps the third American edition reprinting the British first edition, which was also the first English language edition.) [vi], xvi, 60, [2] pp. Publisher's wraps. About Very Good with foxing and soiling to wraps, separation starting along spine and front wrap; foxing to endpapers, lightly to main body of text. An uncommon edition of the famously bizarrely and humorously mistranslated English phrasebook for Portuguese speakers, which first appeared in Paris in 1836. Perhaps as early as the 1850s Mark Twain became aware of the book; he wrote an introduction to the first American edition in 1883. Its nonsense still amuses. Take for instance its hitherto-unknown category of "Insects-reptiles," which consists of "Asp, aspic," "Morpion," "Fly," "Butter fly" and of course "Serpent." The "Familiar Dialogues" are equally goofy-- English conversations one would theoretically have with a tailor or while hunting, etc. that despite the possibility of infinite universes with infinite possibilities quantum physics postulates may exist, still definitely never, ever occurred anywhere except within the pages of this book.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A sample book of approximately 200 tattoo designs in various sizes, mounted on thin cardboard in a 12 x 11" maroon binder, held in place by loose mylar overlays. Very Good with some stickers on cover (one more recent) and tape. Appears to be a reference book for Colorful Al's House of Tattoo in San Rafael, California. Its founder "Colorful Al" died in 2009 in an accidental gas line explosion; some individual sample sheets from his estate have appeared for sale online since, and the work herein seems very similar to them. There is only a single reference to "Colorful Al's" (and no other parlor or artist's name) inside.Features skull designs, grim reapers, Asian dragons, naked ladies, topless Native American princesses, eagles, naval-themed designs, cartoon characters like Betty Boop and a duck somewhere between Donald Duck and Woody Woodpecker, animals, devils, flowers, tigers and more. Overall the sample book looks like late '70s in origin, maybe early '80s at the very latest. A great reference capturing an unironic but modern era of tattooing and California counterculture.

Condition: Very Good. First Thus. Revised edition. The second edition of the pocket dictionary of African American slang attributed to the famous Cotton Club orchestra leader. It has been billed as "the first dictionary published by a Black person," but more accurately it is one of the first lexicons of African American slang of the Jazz age. Some of the words and phrases spread like gangbusters to mainstream America: "chick," "freeby," "hot," "in the groove," "mellow," "corny," and "reefer" for example. Some did not, such as the phrase "togged to the bricks" (meaning to be dressed to kill) and "glims" (much better known as eyes). [16] pp. 2.75" x 4.4" Stapled wraps. Very Good with wave along bottom outer corner of booklet, not stained though, smaller corner crease; staples rusted with a little offsetting. Very Good with scrapes to cover, creased throughout; staples rusted with a little offsetting. Rare, only one institutional copy located in a recent OCLC Worldcat search.
