Loving husband and father, dissipated whore chaser; conscientious lawyer, drunken buffoon; writer of tedious doggerel, and of one of the finest biographies in the English-language: what is one to make a man like this? His copious journals illuminate the paradox, showing us the narcissistic dreamer of glory (Guards officer? politician? fashionable wit?) and the extrovert diarist whose relentless human curiosity drove him on to observe and record, with flashes of insight and vivid descriptive touches, the people he met and the life they lived." Six appendices. Genealogical Tables. Index. Bound in the original tan cloth, stamped in black on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "James Boswell, the great biographer of Johnson, accumulated a huge mass of papers. He kept a daily journal, corresponded with dozens of literary figures of his age, and kept most of his correspondence including copies of letters he sent. This is the story of the 'treasure' of Auchinleck -- one of the most fascinating and varied collections of eighteenth-century papers ever assembled. For more than a century, the papers were believed to have been lost or destroyed in an attempt to hide Boswell's more candid and 'unpublishable' self-revelations About 1925 the staggering task of acquiring and reuniting Boswell's scattered archives was undertaken by an American collector, the late Ralph Heyward Isham The accomplishment of his task after twenty-five years of struggle at the cost of near impoverishment is an epic feat of literary salvage In these lively, colorful pages Buchanan explains what really happened to the papers after Boswell's death and how they were dealt with by successive generations of the Boswell family.". From the pristine dust jacket: "Samuel Johnson encouraged his friends to keep journals, and with the exception of James Boswell, none of them made better use of his advice than Hester Thrale, the talented, witty, courageous woman who, following the death of Johnson's wife, became his closest female friend. Much of the story of the friendship between Johnson and the Thrales is told in a journal begun in 1766 by Hester Thrale to which she gave the name, the 'Family Book.' The 'Family Book' was intended as a chronological record of the growth, accomplishments, education, illnesses, travels, and diversions of the twelve children born of Hester Thrale's marriage to Henry Thale, a prosperous, cultivated London brewer and member of Parliament. It is soon transformed into an intimate account of her own daily life though the children continue to provide much of the drama, mostly tragic since only four of the twelve survived childhood. Despite her personal sorrows, Mrs. Thrale became one of the eighteenth century's most hospitable hostesses. Streatham Park, the Thrales' country house where Johnson lived for much of each year as a well-loved member of the family, drew many of the other cultural luminaries of the day, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Oliver Goldsmith, Charles Burney and his talented daughter Fanny, among others. Mary Hyde has used a wonderful narrative skill. drawing on a wide range of contemporary letters, journals, and biographies as well as much fresh, original research.". Third printing of the 1977 original. Hardcover. New/New. Illus. by Kelly, Felix (jacket art). xvii, 373pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.

NOT a remainder. Pages are fresh, crisp, clean and unmarked. List of chapter notes/bibliographical references. Index. Bound in the original tan cloth, stamped in bright gold on the spine. From the dust jacket: "From the eighteenth century to the present, travellers, explorers, journalists, imaginative writers like Samuel Johnson, and legendary reggae musician Bob Marley have shared a fascination with Abyssinia. So did even earlier writers and mapmakers, who thought Abyssinia was the land of the mythical (and fabulously rich) Christian ruler, Prester John. The principal subject of this book is the allure of the exotic, as represented by Abyssinia, to the British imagination. In addition to Johnson and Marley, some others included are the eighteenth-century Scot James Bruce, nineteenth-century explorer Richard Burton, author Evelyn Waugh, Wilfred Thesiger (best known of twentieth-century British explorers), Sylvia Pankhurst (crusading journalist and daughter of the suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst), and the contemporary Irish traveller Dervla Murphy. The author also considers the beginnings of anthropology and the variations of quest narrative in modern travel writing.". First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. "James Boswell, the great biographer of Johnson, accumulated a huge mass of papers.
