Top review from United Kingdom

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 November 2015
This is an interesting book which covered and explored the reasons why many Germans regarded themselves as victims both during after the war and not as perpetrators. The reasons for this attitude include the perceived Polish aggression against the German minority in Poland at that time, the fact that Britain and France declared war on Germany, and the "terror" airwar over Germany's cities. It also dealt extensively with German attitudes and reactions to Jews, seen through the eyes of written eyewitness letters. The book clearly shows that Germans were aware of the war crimes committed by their own side, but balanced that with their own grievances against the actions of their enemies. In addition, the final section dealt with the war-related trauma in the immediate post-war era and described what people saw as the futility of the whole war effort and sacrifice from a German perspective, especially given that they had lost.
This book was especially interesting because it contained the correspondence of many ordinary Germans at the time and therefore reflected their true feelings about events over which they had little or no influence.

N. Langendorff
5.0 out of 5 stars Gute Historiker
Reviewed in Germany on 2 January 2016
