Diana Quincy returns with a steamy affair between an Arab-American woman who inherits a run-down castle in the English countryside and the duke who asserts the castle is his, in the first book in a brand-new Victorian historical romance series.

Anthony Cary, Duke of Strickland, inherits his spendthrift father’s title and can finally restore the family castle to its former glory. But at the reading of the will, Strick is stunned to learn that his father has secretly disentailed him, leaving the family manor—home to twelve generations of dukes—to Strick’s American stepmother. Everyone knows Strick detests the dowager duchess, and when she dies mysteriously, damning rumors start to surface.

When Raya Darwish unexpectedly inherits her glamorous late cousin’s castle in the English countryside, she clashes with the charismatic young duke who insists the castle is rightfully his. The estate is practically bankrupt, so she must find a way to work with the duke in order to save both of their futures.

The two cannot stand each other, but mutual disdain soon gives way to desire. When questions arise about how her cousin died, Raya cannot help wondering if Strick’s sudden unbridled passion for her is part of a scheme to get his castle back...

“Quincy delivers another compelling story featuring a hardworking heroin in the third entry in her Clandestine Affairs series. She also once again explores the difficulties of living in the Regency ton while also being of Arab descent . . . As the story also contains a slow burn as well as several passionately intimate scenes, there’s much for readers to love. A delightfully multifaceted story from a write who continues to map out new territory for Regency romance.” — Kirkus Reviews (starred review) on The Marquess Makes His Move

"Vivid, bold, witty, and seductive! Diana Quincy is your new historical romance obsession."  — Lenora Bell, USA Today bestselling author of Love Is a Rogue

The angst level is deliciously high and I had no idea how Leela and Hunt were going to work this out... This is a book not to be missed!" — Joanna Shupe, award-winning author of The Devil of Downtown

“Quincy cleverly incorporates much-loved genre tropes into the daringly sensual plot of her print romance debut, and this combined with the refreshingly original, boldly adventurous heroine, who fully embraces her Middle Eastern family origins, makes this marvelously entertaining love story.”  — Booklist (starred review) on Her Night with a Duke

Diana Quincy's new series is off to a ripping start with enemies-to-lovers featuring an Arab American FMC who inherits a castle and a starchy duke who thinks it should have been his. These two are butting heads basically from first meet. Raya is the daughter of textile merchants in the States (and to borrow a phrase), she’s got a head for business and a bod for sin.Raya embarks on a plan to use her business acumen to whip Castle Tremayne into shape and make the estate some money after years of neglect. Anthony, Duke of Strickland, can barely keep up, and truthfully he’d rather focus on his Saxon research and artifacts. These two bicker and banter constantly and it’s damn fun to watch that bicker turn into heavy breathing the moment either gets within arm's length. (Say less, am I right?)I loved that the cultural rep was more extensive than in previous DQ books. I loved Raya’s ish talking auntie and as always, I love a hyper-competent FMC. The MMC who realizes how amazing she is (even if it takes him a minute), he’s not bad either. This may be Diana Quincy’s spiciest novel yet, with Strick’s penchant for, ahem, coarse language, and the fact that these two can’t keep their hands off each other. But I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I'm of two minds on this enemies to lovers romance. I enjoyed the cultural diversity of a Palestinian-American heroine. The duke was a refreshing scholar. But there was a little too much back and forth. Their differences could have been solved with either Raya or Strickland simply asking for clarification rather than assume the worst.

The spicy scenes are a bit anachronistic and I found that distracting.

Overall its a great effort and I was intrigued enough to want to read others in the series as they come out.

This was my first Diana Quincy but I'll definitely be reading more of her books now! Raya and Strick were a dynamite couple with PLENTY of spice--both in build-up and release. Multiple times in multiple places. The third-person dual POV was perfect to watch them both overcome prejudice and pride (still not an Austen retelling) to save Castle Tremayne.

I'm sure actual historians would protest Raya's level of business involvement and Strick's amateur archeology, but both were well-rounded characters because of those details.

I love a man the supports and encourages his woman to follow her dreams and use her skills. Also, he was *ahem* vocally appreciative of all her assets. The language was mostly historical, but some euphemisms have been around longer than people think.

Ready for book 2!

Was just okay. Raya is a strong female character but distrustful of men. Anthony is a typical Duke (entitled). Plenty of lust between them, but I didn't feel the love.

I enjoyed this novel and it was very sexy. However, I feel that the other Quincy novels I’ve read were better written and had a deeper plot.

This historical romance centers around a castle as the titular Duke, Strickland, finds himself forced into proximity with Raya Darwish, a Palestinian-American daughter of factory owners who has, in a very romance-novel twist of events, inherited his ancestral home. Strick and Raya have one of the most classic, beloved historical-romance dynamics, where they can’t stand each other—she’s an opinionated low-class foreign upstart and he’s an arrogant, macho aristocrat—but they want to bone so bad. Sparks fly when they bicker. It’s so fun to watch them provoke each other as they wrangle with the castle’s failing finances and end up working together to save it. Incidentally, they also catch a thief, narrowly evade a few attempts on Raya’s life, and expose a murderer along the way. I loved all the little details in this, like Raya’s Auntie Majida doing tatreez embroidery and Strick’s passion for Anglo-Saxon artifacts, whether he was overseeing archaeological digs or recreating jewelry at his forge. It’s not lost on me that this is an ethical way for a nineteenth-century English aristocrat to love antiquities; he’s not stealing the treasures of other cultures, but celebrating those of his own.

The Duke Gets Desperate is a steamy country-set historical romance that provides a lovely level of diversity to what would be a well loved trope. Quincy beautifully blends Arab traditions and everyday life into the outline of a historical romance. Quincy's tone is elegant and thoughtful, beautifully blending cultures with the understanding and care of what it was like in this time period. If you love Tessa Dare's Romancing the Duke, I think you will find a nice layer of familiarity in the story, while delighting in the way Quincy is able to use her background to create a beautiful, bold and smart heroine who is an Arab-American to carry this story.

The romance in this novel is the sensual center of this story, and is really lovely supported by the heroine and hero's growth through this piece. This story because one in which these two people learn to work with each other, trust each other, take risks with each other and ultimately learn to fight for each other and ask for what they want. Their love is a journey of learning how to rebuild and how to make something thrive. Quincy uses their physical relationship not only to show their growing trust, but also to highlight our heroine's independence and a beautiful layer of consent that she is able to build with the hero.

The Duke Gets Desperate is sure to charm any lover of historical romance and I would very much recommend Diana Quincy if you have not had the opportunity to check her out.

Thank you to Avon Books and NetGalley for an eARC, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I enjoyed Diana Quincy books a lot! This book no exception. Raya is a strong independent woman who is looking to find her place but since New York things have changed and she has no inherited a castle! But the duke who suppose to own is not happy! Must read!

It was nice. I have no particularly strong feelings about this book. Although I did love that she was Palestinian and her cultures food was involved in this book. I found this book to be very tropey? And surmise that I would’ve enjoyed it more in the physical form rather than the audio. I found myself cringing every time the narrators read the spicy scenes which is not usually what one is looking for at those times. Overall it was fine but I think there are others who would enjoy it more than I.

4.0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL

Ohh this was a DELIGHT! Historical romance tends to feel a little intimidating to me for some reason, but this one pulled me in right away, and I had so much fun all throughout. The dynamic between the main character and love interest was SO SO good. They had so much chemistry, and their banter was so hilarious to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully angsty and steamy historical romance!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 20, 2023
I have to admit that the start of this was a little rough for me and I wasn't sure how I'd end up feeling about it. That changed along the way though! It was the initial barrage of unlikeable characters and their outdated views of women in society, particularly preached by Raya's auntie and chaperone, which were trying and frustrating. 😂 BUT I loved the way Raya challenged those expectations as a smart, business-minded, strong-willed and independent woman. She was pretty easy to root for and I loved seeing her pursue actions that she knew would make the castle thrive, despite being surrounded by a village of naysayers and with one particularly loud voice of dissent in the form of His Grace, Anthony Cary. Anthony is a pretty simple man. He's driven by his love of archaeology and Anglo-Saxon artefacts, as well as his love and duty towards his home, Castle Tremayne. He's incensed that the castle was taken from him not once but twice and even more so knowing that it was bequeathed to Raya, an Arab-American who knows nothing about what it means to run a castle. I loved that theirs was truly a hate-to-love romance because I wasn't sure how these two would suit but oh my, were they great together! They drove each other to passionate fits but that fire combined with their undeniable attraction to each other created slow incendiary moments that heated things quickly. Seriously, Anthony and his mouth was something to behold, lol. 🥵 This was surprisingly angsty and although I'm not usually one for angsty reads, I ate it up! I loved the tension, the way their relationship grew, and how they learned to love and respect each other.

There were parts of the story that I wished got more time to properly unfold, especially the more "mysterious" aspect to it but I wasn't too fussed because I was fully invested in Raya and Anthony and I wanted more of them! This was my first book by Diana Quincy but it definitely won't be my last.
