⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
Bronwyn is working as a mysterious secret agent, the Kestrel, and is on a ship from London to Philadelphia to deliver a vital message. As the sister of a Duke, she’s used to people underestimating her and uses it to her advantage. But she doesn’t count on her brother’s friend Valentine, Duke of Thornbury. He’s supposedly given up spying for the crown, but is trying to track down the Kestrel. He keeps getting distracted by the gorgeous and seemingly flighty Bronwyn, though. As the two spend more time together, their attraction grows even while it becomes obvious that all is not as simple as it appears.
This series hits just right for me, with the perfect balance of adventure and romance, angst and quips. Bronwyn continues to surprise Valentine, even after he knows he shouldn’t underestimate her. And she makes him feel, ugh, feelings. It doesn’t hurt that the steamy scenes are super hot, and show new sides to each character.
This series has a fantastic diverse and historically accurate cast of characters. They are all equally engaging, and I’d read a book featuring any of them. I also enjoy the way Howard incorporates real life history and people into the story.
I love a fast-paced plot with lots of action and intrigue, and A Duke in Question delivers. Bronwyn and Valentine’s sizzling chemistry goes hand in hand with their quest to catch the villain too. This entire series is fabulous, and now I need to go back and read the installments I’ve missed!
The banter and wit between these MC was delightful and found myself laughing at the exchanges and thoughts both MC were having on the ship across the Altantic the first time. I enjoyed how the tropes played out and the twist I didn’t see coming. I love capable and strong FMC and found that in Bronwyn. Valentine struggled internally in all aspects of Bronwyn from his attraction, trusting, and protectiveness of her. It took him almost until the end to reconcile it all but I found his character endearing.
There are four encounters plus both MC self-pleasure, fantasized thoughts that also include restraints/handcuffs. Majority of the encounters are on the rougher side in comparison to other HR but I feel like they matched the passion of both characters.
This books was just ok. I was actually pretty conflicted because some of it was pretty great and some of it was so out of place I found myself pausing to look things up because I wasn’t sure if they were historically accurate or not.
I loved the banter between Bee and Valentine. She did such an amazing job of getting under his skin. I laughed out loud when he thought “He was going to stab himself with his own fork, just to put himself out of his own misery,” after a dinner with her.
I could appreciate that “Bronwyn wanted to make her mark. A mark…any mark that would deem her worthy, that would be a reminder that she had been here on earth at this time.” It set this book up for some of my favorite tropes like lady spy, enemies to lovers and a headstrong FMC.
I liked Val. I loved that despite being this infamous spy known for being incredibly difficult to deceive, he was thrown completely for a loop by Bee.
What I didn’t like was what seemed to me to be historical inaccuracies. As part of being a spy Val was “married” to another spy who he conveniently “divorced” with little fuss before the start of this book. While divorce was not impossible I don’t think the ease with which his divorce was attained and the lack of scandal would have been realistic.
Her drawers fitting in his pocket had me running to Google to see if my knowledge of 19th century undergarments was incredibly wrong. All of this really surprised me after reading the amount of research the author put into inserting this story into real historical events.
I love a FMC who knows what she wants in the bedroom but I had a hard time buying Bee’s forwardness and knowledge as a virgin without better explanation that “she read it in a book.”
