Purchase options and add-ons

Against the Bridgerton-era backdrop of Regency London, Anna Bradley’s witty and sexy new trilogy sets fiercely alpha dukes against the duchesses who are determined to transform their delinquent husbands by any means necessary. A delight for fans of Mary Jo Putney, Sabrina Jeffries, Ella Quinn, Diana Quincy and Julia Quinn.

When scandals force three devilishly handsome dukes into hasty marriages, they intend to maintain their wicked ways in private. But their deceptively demure duchesses are capable of bringing even the most errant husband to heel, in this delightful new Regency-set series . . .

One should never judge a duke by his cover. As far as London society knows, Giles Drew, the Duke of Basingstoke, is everything a proper aristocrat ought to be. But when a notorious scandal sheet publishes details of Giles’s questionable bedroom antics, only one bride can salvage his reputation.

Prim and penniless, Francesca Stanhope has resigned herself to a season full of the
ton’s snickering—until the Duke of Basingstoke’s dizzying courtship transforms her fate. Yet wedded bliss quickly turns into a clash of wills as Franny realizes her handsome duke is a devil in disguise.

But beneath the newlywed’s skirmishes lies scorching heat. And while each attempts to tame the other, the truth is that this unconventional union may be all either could ever desire . . .

Anna Bradley writes Regency and Georgian historical romance with heat, heart, and happily-ever-afters. Her books have received starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, and Library Journal, and her debut novel won the Romantic Times’ award for Best First Historical. Anna is originally from New England, but now makes her home in Oregon, where she lives with her family, an overgrown English garden and a menagerie of wayward pets. If she isn’t writing, she’s probably hiding in a corner reading, chasing the dog, or herding the cats.

*Spoilers Ahead*

Anna Bradley is a talented author of historical romance. The two main characters are engaging and the plot moves at a brisk pace. However there were a few plot points that fell wide of the mark for me and gave me pause before deciding between three or four stars.

There is a gratuitous ménage scene very early in book that I’m assuming was used to show how “mad, bad and dangerous to know” the Duke of Blasingstoke was. This scene was off putting for me and may be for other readers.
Both lead characters seemed relatively unscarred by horrendous scandal. The former Duke was truly evil but his family appear unscathed by his behavior. Our hero, the current Duke is a happy rake and our heroine is only looking for money to help her poor ill mother but turns down a rich man she’s wildly attracted to twice before accepting his proposal.
While historically accurate, writing rape off as just a scandal when the perpetrator continued on his merry way was jarring. Can a duchess at the center of the ton be kept in the dark by hiding the paper? These were a few plot points that seemed “off” to me. While the characters were truly worthy of a good story, I’m not sure this was it for me.

Sometimes I take a chance on an author I haven’t read and get surprised with a new favorite. This is one of them! This book was completely enchanting — a divinely handsome Duke brought to heel by a spirited women who happens to be appropriate to the period. I loved that she was independent and fierce without being a 21st spirit plunged into Regency dress. The conflict was believable, the dialogue sparkling, and she weaves the thoughts of the characters into the story in an easy natural way. Now I have to go find all of her backlist.

This was a book I was gifted so that I could do a feature last year, and it’s been in my queue to read ever since. I am so glad that I finally got to it because I had so much fun reading this book! It hooked me right away, and I enjoyed the whole ride.

Giles Drew, the Duke of Basingstoke, has agreed to an arranged marriage with a woman he’s never met. When he has a chance run in with a woman matching her description, he thinks he’s had excellent luck. Until he finds out that his mysterious woman is not his betrothed - but her beloved cousin.

I like my romances to be fairly fluffy, and this had just the perfect balance of tension without actually stressing me out. It gave me just a touch of Bridgerton season 2 vibes, but the women got to support each other more like they did in the book.

My only (mild) complaint was that there was a family backstory that was introduced as part of the conflict that I wish had been explored a little more.

Overall, I really loved this one and can’t wait to read more from this author!

I admittedly waited a bit on reading this book after reading some of the other reviews, but once I finally picked it up, I enjoyed it more than I expected. It is unlikely to be re-read, though, unlike the books in Bradley's prior Swooning Virgins series,

FMC Franny is the daughter of an earl who was killed in a duel over his wife. MMC Giles is the son of the man who killed Franny's father. Franny and her mother have been left to languish in extreme poverty by Franny's uncle and the current earl. When an old family friend offers to sponsor Franny for a season, Franny takes the opportunity to come to town and confront her uncle.

As the book opens, Giles is essentially betrothed to Franny's cousin Susannah. He is trying to overcome the scandals of his father and wants to heal the rift between the families. An unexpected encounter with Franny, however, threatens all of his plans.

I really like Franny - she is smart, strong, and resilient, She doesn't take the easy way out. Giles, on the other hand, has few redeeming qualities even as the book progresses. He of course doesn't marry Susannah but not because of his own actions or decisions. His actions towards Franny are continually dictated by his focus on his own needs and desires and the relationship feels very one-sided. He is the main detractor from my full enjoyment of the story.

Still, Bradley is a good writer and I will still likely pick up other books in this series. Solid 3 stars. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. The opinions herein are my own.
