Purchase options and add-ons

USA Today bestselling author Vivienne Lorret continues her charming new trilogy with a bluestocking whose search for information on the mating habits of scoundrels has her stumbling upon the missing heir to an earldom... in the London underworld.

Jane Pickerington never intended to start a brawl in a brothel. She only wanted to research her book. Yet when her simple study of scoundrels goes awry, she finds herself coming to the rescue of a dark, enigmatic stranger… who turns out to be far more than an average rake out for a night of pleasure. He’s positively wild!

Only the most feral and cunning could have survived foundling homes and work houses. Orphaned as an infant, Raven never had another name. At least… not until he meets her. Now he’s face-to-face with the one person who recognizes the strange birthmark on his arm and can reinstate him to his blue-blooded birthright.

All at once, Raven’s life takes a turn. His knowledge of dark alleys and gaming hells never prepared him for gilded ballrooms. So Jane becomes his tutor. Yet, the more lessons in decorum she offers, the more this untamed scoundrel wants to teach her all the ways to be wicked.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The deliciously slow-burning second Regency romance in Lorret’s Mating Habits of Scoundrels series pairs an inquisitive debutante with an indifferent loner... Raven and Jane are an excellent match: Jane’s curiosity and innocence adds spark to their sensuous moments while Raven’s playfulness keeps things light and airy. Witty flirtation, steamy interludes, and a bit of fascinating mystery combine into a irresistible romance."  — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"splendidly witty and superbly sexy... an exceptionally entertaining romance." — Booklist

"Lorret’s witty dialog and clever blending of sweet and sensual elements make this second in a projected trilogy as entertaining as its acclaimed predecessor. Recommended for all historical romance collections." — Library Journal (starred review)

“a sexy page-turner... you can’t help but root for these two stubborn, persistent characters to fall for each other... the novel draws you in and leaves a satisfied smile on your face.” — Entertainment Weekly for How to Forget a Duke

"Asher and Winn are endearingly complex characters with wit and chemistry to spare. Romance readers will be delighted." — Publishers Weekly

“This is the author you’ve been waiting for!” — New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan

I had been hoping for a story with Raven, and boy does this one deliver. I absolutely adore Jane, and Raven is the perfect (honourable) scoundrel. They play off each other so well. It's a slow burn but the chemistry is there is spades right from the beginning, and once they get there, the heat is scorching. Plus their banter is such a delight. Jane's oft-too-literal quips were just hilarious. It was a pleasure to have a truly brilliant and intrepid heroine, who knew who she was and what she wanted and wasnt afraid to embrace it. The mystery of Raven's beginnings was an intriguing and well done side-plot too . I sequestered myself in the bedroom a d stayed up way too late because I just couldnt put it down.

Cant wait for Ellie and Prue to find scoundrels of their own.

I enjoyed the characters and the last 30% of the book got really interesting with the mystery of the fire and the surprise maid situation. Jane and Raven had good chemistry but it wasn't what kept me reading the book. I liked each individual character from Jane to Raven and all the supporting characters like the Earl and Mr. Miggins. I absolutely adored how nonchalantly Jane confessed her love for Raven. It felt so true to her character. Overall it was a good book.

Having a particularly tough week, this book was the equivalent to a large glass of wine or a pint of Ben & Jerry’s as far as stress relief.

Analytical and a bit reckless when it comes to pursuing firsthand knowledge of her latest subject of study-the Mating Habits of Scoundrels—Jane finds the most perfect source for the information she desires in the man known only as Raven.

Savvy and street smart, Raven is the ultimate lone-wolf, secretly longing for a pack of his own when he encounters a chaotic whirlwind hiding in the shadows of his favorite brothel.

After a hilariously memorable first meeting their fates become intertwined as the duo launch into an investigation of his origins that could potentially change his life forever. During the course of which, it will come as no surprise that romance ensues and with this decidedly odd pairing, the path they take is riddled with not only sexy sparks of chemistry but loads of delicious humor.

It’s near impossible to not fall in love with this couple and become invested in the lives of the secondary characters who surround them. I know, I for one, will be waiting rather impatiently for this series to continue and will be snatching up previous titles from this author as fast as I can.

I am now a permanent Vivienne Lorret fan. My Kind of Earl was so much fun to read that I couldn’t wait to finish, and I kept sneaking in a chapter here and there when I should have been doing something else. Raven enchanted me from the first page, and Jane’s delightfully intense vocabulary sent me diving for the dictionary more times than I could count—almost embarrassing for someone who works with words for a living. Their conversations made me snort with laughter and weep in the most unexpected moments. The secondary characters were skillfully drawn—intriguing and unique but never overpowering of the main characters’ story arc. The Mating Habits of Scoundrels is a delightful series, and I’m truly looking forward to book 3.

I really enjoyed this book but..... that ending was just so bland. After the cruel things the hero said, hitting every single vulnerable spots the heroine has she just forgives him so easily.

Jane grew up in an aristocratic home, but was all but ignored by her flighty parents. She was the oldest and essentially raised and educated her younger siblings. Jane was bookish and scientific, with an analytical mind. Raven, who worked in the gambling hell owned by Reed Stirling (from the book Rogue to Ruin) was an orphan who was raised in a work house. He was abused and didn't trust anyone. They met in unique circumstances, and Jane's observant eye and curiosity forged a friendship, in the quest to discover Raven's parentage. This story was so good, and I loved the characters!

I am a fan of this author's work and have read everything she's written but found this one annoying for several reasons. I understand that Jane is a bright, inquisitive woman with an interest in science. However the author's word choices as ascribed to Jane were tedious and annoying. I am also a bright woman and found myself continuously taken out of the story in order to look up words I'd never seen before. An example I can think of now is the word runnels which was used more than once and it seemed to be used inappropriately anyway. Also I found it odd to be running her hands over Ravens head as they were kissing and have Jane in her mind refer to it as his cranium. I understand the word choices were a way to demonstrate Jane's quirkiness but I found them exasperating. These word choice issues, more so in the beginning of the book, almost made me stop reading in frustration.

I also felt the ending was rushed and unfulfilling. I agree with the other reviewers who commented that an epilogue would have at the least provided some sense of satisfaction as several points were left unresolved.

As in the first book in the series, there are references throughout to poor Pru, one of the four friends in this group, who has been sent away due to some incident that occurred with a man. I had hoped her story was being set up by the first book but instead we have Jane's story. The next book is about Ellie so it appears whatever happened to Pru won't be revealed until the 4th book in the series which won't be for some time as Ellie's story won't be out until July 2021.

Though I was disappointed and frustrated by this book at times it still was basically a good story. Because previous to this book I have enjoyed this author's work and often pre-order her books, I do plan to read the next in the series.

I can’t tell you what about this story excites me most, but I found this to be one of the best I’ve read so far, that’s 74 Historical Romance novels in 2022 and I read this and just loved the characters, Jane is so strong willed and brave, the connection between sue and Raven, plus the discovery of passion was just beyond enjoyable for me. Definitely recommend.

I can hardly express how much I loved this story. It was just perfect! There was so much magic between Jane and Raven. The story made me both laugh and cry. I was also really happy that it was about Raven, because I was already really intrigued by him during the story of Reed and Ainsley. Jane was also such a wonderful character, the perfect kind of bluestocking. This is undoubtedly my favorite Vivienne Lorret story thus far and one of the best stories I’ve read overall during the past years. Absolutely marvelous! Ten stars at least!!!

Lead female was interesting, but too accepting of the lead males sexual immorality. Lead male was a man whore who met the lead female at a brothel - not a promising beginning. Probably could have liked him if he showed at least some regret for living his life as a whore and frequenting brothels - instead he ‘chose’ that life and often times teased the lead female about his sexual experiences...I did not find him funny, just poor taste.
