The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell (Avon Historical Romance) Kindle Edition

A new bride unravels her husband’s tortured soul in USA Today bestselling author Samantha James’s Victorian romance The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell.

A cruel twist of fate changed Simon Blackwell’s life irreparably. A man of intense passions, he resolved to deny his emotions and desires forever, taking refuge in the wilds of the moorlands and shutting himself off from the world. But on one extraordinary night, on a rare trip to London, the unthinkable occurs. An intoxicatingly beautiful stranger stirs the sensuous hunger he has sworn to resist. Simon Blackwell believed that no woman could tempt him.

No woman . . . save Annabel McBride.

Annabel knows nothing of Simon’s secret pain. But one irresistible kiss plunges her into marriage with a man she scarcely knows, a man who hides a shattered past. She can feel the blistering heat of the fire that smolders within this exquisitely handsome man, making her yearn for much more than the union in name only he has promised her.

But Simon dares not love again—for fragile love can be lost in an instant. And now Annabel must find a way to open his heart to the most glorious risk of all . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Other than a secret that takes too long to reveal, this Victorian romance from James (A Perfect Hero) concerning the troubled union of fiery Annabel McBride and tormented Simon Blackwell is just about perfect: rich, meaty, sexy and honest. Upon meeting, the two immediately set to butting heads, but it isn't long before an instant of weakness finds them in a passionate lip lock. Just like that, their fate is sealed: Anne's reputation is compromised and the two are married. Simon, haunted by unmentionable heartbreak, refuses to consummate the marriage, planning to divorce her after a year or so; Anne is horrified at the prospect and determined to make a genuine husband out of him. Simon thwarts her every attempt until his past catches up with him, and she finds the way to bring him back from self-imposed emotional exile. Simon's dark secret, hinted at throughout, may frustrate readers, but it also lends the book an enticing gothic edge. James's writing is assured, her story moves well, and she has a fine pair of leads in Anne and Simon; their hard-won happily ever after will satisfy any historical romance fan. (Apr.)

From Booklist

Haunted by painful memories of the past, Simon Blackwell wants little to do with society and nothing to do with love. A chance encounter in the park and a split-second decision to save a boy's life bring him into the home of the grateful mother and her cousin, Lady Annabel. He can steel himself against the family's warmth, the little boy who reminds him of his own, but there's a siren's call intrinsic to Annabel's very being to which he becomes utterly lost, and found. At times the intensity spills into melodrama, but ultimately the sexual and emotional tension wins out in James' tale of the wounded and redeemed hero filled with delicious angst and quiet beauty. Simon Blackwell is haunted by painful memories and has no desire for a family. He is a loner and spends most of his time drinking. He meets Annabel McBride and they end up married after finding themselves in a compromising position. She does not know what happened to make her husband so aloof. He tells her they will never have a real marriage and after one year they can divorce. Ann decides she will improve his home and make herself busy for the time she will spend there. This was a beautiful love story. Took some time getting there but great read.

The writer has filled a story with a depth of emotion that I seldom find! You are drawn into the story from the very beginning!

Simon Blackwell has endured a lifetime of tragedy and leads a solitary existence in the country. Taking a rare trip to London, Simon crosses paths with Annabel McBride. Unable to resist her allure, Simon and Annabel, 'Anne,' are found in a compromising situation.

Anne finds Simon irritatingly attractive. He's rude, bossy and irresistible. Anne doesn't know about Simon's tragic past and is confused by the mixed signals he's sending her. She can sense that he wants her but he refuses to take her. Anne wants more from Simon than an in name only marriage. She wants his passion. She wants his heart. But does Simon have a heart left to give?

Historical romance fans take note, do not miss this sensual first book in what promises to be a delicious new Samantha James trilogy. The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.

I must admit that I now have a secret passion FOR Simon Blackwell. A man that loves with his whole heart just rings my bell. Simon's love for Anne and hers for him was just heart warming.

The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell is not to be missed!

Emotion filled, frustrating, high tension, sexy and sensual story about two people forced to be together through a marriage of convenience...my fave :O) If you want a grand adventure...bypass this book. I think I read a comment that said "nothing happened in this book", I have to remember to mark that comment "very useful" because it was very true. But I like the simplicity of this novel. It was just an very intense story between Simon with his sexy smile and internal torment, and the patient, loving Annabel. The sub characters were sprinkled in just right and did not take away from the main story and there really wasn't any outside influences keeping them apart. The only thing keeping them apart was Simon's supposed inability to move on from the pass. I love books that have the female as the sexual aggressor and the Alpha male fighting his feelings, so this book was perfect for me. I cried a lot...a lot...mostly towards the end of the book and I did yell out in frustration a couple times at Simon. It did take a long time to get to the juicy stuff that I like to read (about 270 pgs) but it was well worth the wait. This is my first book by Samantha James but I'm feeling her writing style so I'll check out her other books. This was a one day read and I gotta give Samantha James her props for keeping me up until 3:00am on a work night! After twenty years of reading these types of books, hopefully I can add another author to my auto-buy list; Lisa Kleypas is getting lonely LOL!...we'll see. Chip Chip, Cheerio!!!!!

This book is about Simon who has lived in darkness and drink for the last 5 years, since his wife and 2 boys died in a tragic fire during a ferocious storm. Anne is a happy and outspoken lady who initially after meeting Simon to a dislike to him. Yet, in one second of passion in a garden during a birthday party have them tying the knot in moments.

To me this a 5 star book. It is not your usual round of meet, marry, fight a villain, and happily ever after. There is no villain in this story. The only hindrance to finding love is Simon's difficulty in letting go of the past and starting over. Fear is the main theme here. The story is very relatable. The arguments and how they come to overcome Simon's feeling of loss is touching. The intimate scenes are tasteful and descriptive. I have this book in paperback and have read it many times throughout the years and still love it.

Simon Blackwell travels to London for his aunt's 70th birthday and meets Annabel who he later compromises. He is forced to marry her. He tells her he will not consummate the marriage or ever have children.

Later she learns he is widowed. He had a wife and two sons who were killed five years ago in a storm. His last words to his youngest son haunts him to this day.

Annabel attempts to seduce and ends up succeeding. Soon after the consummation, she learns she is pregnant and dreads telling him about it.. However she need not worry because he is in love with her.

I liked this book but I have to admit there are many other books that are better than this one.

I couldn't put it down!!!! A tale so mesmerizing that the words flowed smoothly one word following the next. The characters literally jumping off the page. Each character reacting off each other as if the story actually happened. Samantha James doesn't disappoint.
