A Matter of Convenience (The Mayfair Literary League Book 1) Kindle Edition

A delightful new series introducing the ladies of the Mayfair Literary League from USA Today Bestselling Author Lana Williams. The series has charmingly spirited heroines with a love of books, dashing rogues, humor, steamy kisses, and twists you might not see coming.

One bold move could change their futures...

Bonded by books and united by a purpose, the Mayfair Literary League takes on a new agenda—For Better or Worse. The bachelors of London won’t know what hit them when these bookish ladies set their sights on the men in their lives who don’t see them for who they truly are—yet.

She refuses to live with regret...

Lady Phoebe Fitzroy knows her assets are few and the clock is ticking before Society declares her a spinster. Yet how could she accept another offer when her heart belongs to a man who seems completely unaware of her existence?

He refuses to marry without love...

Anthony Stanhope, the Earl of Bolton, intends to see his siblings settled before dealing with his own marriage. One thing he knows for certain—his will be a love match. Watching his parents’ cold marriage of convenience has convinced him to seek more for his future.

It’s clear to Phoebe that she must take matters into her own hands to force Anthony to see her as someone more than his sister’s friend. To help bolster her courage, she dares the ladies of the Mayfair Literary League to join her by making bold moves of their own with their secret crushes.

Will her effort to catch Anthony’s eye—and his heart—end in disaster or lay the path for the future of which she’s always dreamed?

Lady Phoebe Fitzroy met Anthony, Earl of Bolton at her come out and fell in love. 7 years later she decides to do something instead of just hoping he will truly "see" her worth. Phoebe is kind, intelligent and lovely but pales in comparison to her beautiful younger sister Amanda. She loves to read and formed the Mayfair Literary League - a group of 6 ladies who read a wide variety of books, discuss them and do charity works. Now she has added another aspect - the "For Better or Worse" agenda. Instead of hoping a particular man will notice you, be bold. In Phoebe's case, she writes the reasons she and Anthony should have a marriage of convenience - although she is in love with him and hopes he will learn to care for her. By no means are the members to gain a husband through compromise. So Phoebe proposes to Anthony in a very business like manner. He is horrified - he has no plans to marry until he sees his 3 siblings settled - and then it will be a love match, never a marriage of convenience as his parents, who were miserable. When he politely declines, Phoebe is hurt, but has no regrets for trying to attract his attention. But Anthony cannot keep his distance from Phoebe and with their siblings being friends, he frequently is in her company. The more he talks to Phoebe, the more he likes her and his attraction grows. Phoebe is trilled to be in Anthony's company and hopes he will change his mind. The roller coaster ride with them is enchanting and enjoyable proving you must believe in yourself - doing nothing changes nothing but results come from change. A delightful romance with a lady taking charge to show her true worth!! A wonderful start to a charming series!

I may have read this before as it seemed familiar, it even if I had, I enjoyed it once again. I liked the two main characters and the give and take between them. The supporting characters all add to the story.

🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐️

Will he be able to see who she is before it is too late…

Phoebe is so easy to love, she refuses to let fate leave her with regrets why she takes matter in her own hands, even if she does not handle it perfectly, she at least tried.
After years on the marriage mart, she hears the clock tickling, with less and less option in front of her, even if in her heart there has only been one, her friend’s older brother.
Anthony never really thought anything special about Phoebe, only one of his sisters’ friend. But her proposal opens his eyes unexpectedly.
Now his eyes have been opened, he sees her, really her, not the overlooked less fashionable lady.

For there begins a courting non-courting sort of friendship that permits him to explore what could be.
A lovely read of her lady bold enough to try to reach for her heart desires.

This new series is off to a great start! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. It has so many of my favorite things from a book club with an interesting group of women friends to handsome rogues to steamy interludes. In this story, Phoebe decides she wants to help her secret crush see her in a whole new light. What better way to involve her friends from the literary league than to get them to make moves of their own as well? Phoebe sends Anthony's world into a tailspin, and it's a delight to watch. He doesn't know what hit him and can't get Phoebe out of his mind. The scene where he has to make his own bold move is one of my favorites! I can't wait to see which of the wonderful ladies in the league gets her story next. So much fun!

4 1/2*STARS*
Lady Phoebe Fitzroy is the leader of The Mayfair Literary League. Together the ladies discuss books, politics and the charities they sponsor. Still unwed after several seasons, the threat of her father's choice in a husband gives Phoebe the idea for a new agenda, FOR BETTER OR WORSE. Phoebe decides to be the first to step forward to pursue the man who holds her heart. She proposes a marriage of convenience to Anthony Stanhope, the Earl of Bolton, even as her heart says she loves him. When he refuses, she gives him a list of why she would make a good wife. Anthony isn't ready for marriage, but he can't get Phoebe and her list off his mind. Her bold move makes an impression on Anthony. He is suddenly in pursuit of Phoebe and those heated kisses keep getting hotter. It's a bumpy road to happiness.

I loved it. Couldn't put it down. I was eager to find out how things would progress. Sometimes all it takes is a little courage and honesty to bring an 'ugly duckling' to the attention of her handsome but distracted prince. I can't wait to see what happens with the other members of the Literary League.

Meet Phoebe Fitzroy leader of The Mayfair Literatory League in the new serie written by the delightful and inspired Lana Williams. As Julia from Charming the Scolar , Phoebe is a bluestocking but she is not so pretty nor so popular and she wants to wed. So she proposes to her four friends to do a bold move for not remaining old spinsters.
As usual a wonderful story with witty heroines and I long for the following ebook :a pretend betrothal

This is the first book in The Mayfair Literary League series. The characters are well drawn, the book is well written and the story is engrossing; however, the writer does use Americanisms that are not used in England today and were certainly not used in England in the late 19th Century - they are infrequent so don’t jar too much.

It would have been a 5* if the hero, Anthony, didn’t vacillate so much, and didn’t humiliate the heroine, in front of a Ballroom full of onlookers, then walk away leaving her to deal with the fallout - although he does redeem himself later in the book. I also wanted to shake the heroine, Phoebe, she is supposedly a strong and decisive woman but turns to mush when confronted by detractors, and allows Anthony to ‘take liberties’ when he has told her he is not interested in marrying her - has she no self respect!

There are some passionate passages (kisses and fondling) with only one full sex passage, which took place on their honeymoon. It’s around the middle mark for steam.

Despite a few negatives, I found the book entertaining and the epilogue is extremely satisfying, going 20 years into the future. I will be reading the next in the series.
