I bought this for my wife so she could have fresh herbs in the winter. I also bought her the salsa kit and the lettuce kit. Surprisingly she started with the lettuce. You fill the reservoir with water and add a cap of the provided nutrients (each kit comes with one). You drop the pods in and keep the plastic domes on them. This provides them a humid environment to start growing. There is a pump in the base that pushes water up the tube and dribbles out of the 6 ends, down the sides of the faux dirt in the pods. The pump seems to circulate once every hour while the lights are on. I plugged my lights in at 7am for the first run and they go off at 9pm. They are extremely bright and the height is adjustable. The lettuce sprouted in 3 days and after about 2 weeks we were trimming lettuce for salads. After a month we transplanted the lettuce outside and immediately attracted rabbits to the yard. My wife then started the salsa kit which is heirloom cherry tomatoes and jalapenos. She did 3 of each. One of the jalapeno pods didn't sprout and Aerogarden sent us a new replacement pod. It sprouted but it was behind the others so we transplanted them into their own flower pots and put them in the window. They are doing quite well in soil after being started in the Aerogarden. The 3 tomato plants have exploded with growth and after a few weeks we had tons of yellow flowers on the plants. The flowers wilted and within a day, the tiniest little green tomatos were forming. It's been a week since the flowers died but we have about 50 tiny tomatos about the size of one segment of your finger. That's from only 3 tomato pods. Once we get a few good harvests from these we will transplant them to soil and put them in the window as well. Then we will finally get to the herbs which was the original purpose for my purchase, lol.

So far, it's been super fun and easy to grow lettuce, tomatos, and jalapenos with this device. There is a light that goes red and tells you when it needs water. It tells you when it needs nutes. It's easy to clean since the whole top tray where the pods insert can be lifted. After a month, it's recommended to clean the filter of the pump since roots (yes there will be tons) can grow into the meshing. The lights turn on and off automatically. It's super simple to use.
If you have a brown thumb... This will help you make it turn green. Plug it in, in the morning initially to set the light schedule. Drop in the pods. Follow the directions on the card for care/pruning if necessary. Live your life and it will do it's thing. Reap the rewards of fresh veggies and herbs after only a few weeks. I'm not gonna say best investment ever, but it's close. And if you appreciate super fresh produce then you will definitely love this.
