Will their differences be too much against them …
I do not know if it is the nurse in me, but since I have read “Hello, Stranger”, I am sold to any historical romance book about a healer.
Plus this one was my first read by the author.
From the first minute, I was sucked into the pages, I even struggled to lift my eyes from the words.
The author paints a moving vivid colorful rich clash of many worlds at one time. As it is not only the collision of a commoner life with a peer’s but also of the East with the West.
Plus it was more than a simple romance with the added mystery.
Hanna is set on her path, she is a bonesetter as her father was, it is her calling and nothing will alter her path. Alas as a woman, she faces many trials, from the view no woman is a true healer as they lack the knowledge from her practice being seen as quackery plus her foreign origins. She is in for a difficult journey.
She is used to have to prove her worth, so when a man comes calling with an injured arm, she knows he will doubt her skill, but she quickly proves him wrong. All the while trying to keep him at arms-length as he unsettles her, arising new feelings and sensations. When she knows from the beginning anything between them is impossible.
Griff is no rake nor scoundrel, he might be a titled peer, it is not really welcome into the ton, his name tarnished by past rumors. So he quite strictly stays by himself, not really mingling. Until he got an unexpected insight about a stolen jewel recently returned to him. Following the lead, he witnesses the act of a woman standing her ground over some bullies, until he realizes she might also have answers. So to arrange a meeting, he uses his war wound as an excuse. So sure, she is a fraud. So when she resets his bones to their right place and gives him back his life free of pain, it shreds his blinders and makes him see her as much more than an attractive woman.
Their relationship is up to many ups and downs, even more when he has secrets. Still, despite everything they find a way to go forward, never letting the constraints of their differences stop them. There are many impediments for them to be together, they walk a thin line between scandal and rejection. Yet they need the other like lungs air, but will it be enough with so many hurdles against them.
I adored my travel to Hanna’s world, she is the breathing example of a successful upbringing, she bears the two worlds signature all the while creating her own. The added mystery was fun to unravel, even if the villain is obvious from the beginning. It even kept me on edge as to why and how will they unmask him.
