Histoire
Locked behind bars for three years, Shadow did his time, quietly waiting for the day when he could return to Eagle Point, Indiana. A man no longer scared of what tomorrow might bring, all he wanted was to be with Laura, the wife he deeply loved, and start a new life. But just days before his release, Laura and Shadow's best friend are killed in an accident. With his life in pieces and nothing to keep him tethered, Shadow accepts a job from a beguiling stranger he meets on the way home, an enigmatic man who calls himself Mr. Wednesday.

Meaty Stuff!

Funny, poignant, profound... It's got a bit of everything. An interesting take on belief. It's also got quite a bit of Wikipedia fodder in it. I learned a lot about world religions as a result. I was immediately drawn in by the story. Multiple actors in the performance were a big bonus.

Histoire
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Was this a first draft?

This recording creates an intriguing dichotomy of a dumpster fire of sophomoric dialogue read by a Shakespearean actor. It's supposed to be a quasi medieval fantasy, but the prose is pedestrian and infantile, liberally salted with contemporary idioms, cliches, and mixed metaphors. Granted, it has an engaging storyline. But it feels like the author started writing this in junior high, and finished it in adulthood after digesting some more mature literature, failing to polish up the manuscript with a second draft and the fresh eyes of a proper editor.
I had to stop listening in the middle of the fifth chapter. The account of his study of sex magic and the tryst with a female mage was embarrassingly cringeworthy. The women in this story are either mothers or objects of desire, and when they do have power or importance, their character is overshadowed by their sexual appeal. The protagonist's dialogue with other characters betrays the author's unfamiliarity with genuine human interactions. I think there might have been some attempts at humor here, but it was the sort produced by those who lack any understanding of wit.
It feels like it truly wants to be somewhere in the vicinity of Harry Potter and A Song Of Ice And Fire. It's not even in the same time zone. I really wanted to like this, as it was highly recommended by a friend. It was a challenge to get through, but alas, I failed.
