Histoire
Hatshepsut - the daughter of a general who usurped Egypt's throne and a mother with ties to the previous dynasty - was born into a privileged position in the royal household, and she was expected to bear the sons who would legitimize the reign of her father's family. Her failure to produce a male heir was ultimately the twist of fate that paved the way for her improbable rule as a cross-dressing king.

Good book. The description of mummification made me get weird looks as I squicked out fabric shopping. I did enjoy the attempt at looking at what we know with more of a fine eye than just applying blanketed biases to it.

Histoire
They say that the Thorn of Camorr can beat anyone in a fight. They say he steals from the rich and gives to the poor. They say he's part man, part myth, and mostly street-corner rumor. And they are wrong on every count. Only averagely tall, slender, and god-awful with a sword, Locke Lamora is the fabled Thorn, and the greatest weapons at his disposal are his wit and cunning. He steals from the rich - they're the only ones worth stealing from - but the poor can go steal for themselves.

It’s got some gallows humor and some really awful imagery with horse urine but all around it’s an engaging story.

I think this book would be better if I owned the original with it. Without it it’s a little hard to follow.
This also isn’t great if you’re some one who practices magic in the modern sense as this is an anthropological look at the history of magic.

Histoire
In 1941 a 31-year-old Frenchwoman, a young mother born to privilege and known for her beauty and glamour, became the leader of a vast intelligence organization - the only woman to serve as a chef de résistance during the war. Strong-willed, independent, and a lifelong rebel against her country’s conservative, patriarchal society, Marie-Madeleine Fourcade was temperamentally made for the job. No other French spy network lasted as long or supplied as much crucial intelligence. Fourcade was captured twice by the Nazis - and both times she managed to escape.

World War Two is always a difficult read, so many people died. This story has that, and the stories of many involved with Alliance but learning about it is both beautiful and necessary. This book does it well.

It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, especially if they don’t have an open mind, but this story is a beautiful tale that interweaves Islamic history with fantastic stories. I am excited to read thing third book when it’s released. Here’s hoping.

What is a God?
Évalué le: 2018-09-19
I got this after watching the Amazon Prime Television series and realized how much it changed. While some will fight that one is better than the other, the undertones are appropriate for the times they are telling the stories in, which feels so in line with the way the Gods are in this world. Shadow and Mr. Wednesday are compelling characters and complex. I like the dramatic reading, it adds to it.

The science fiction genre has become increasingly influential in mainstream popular culture, evolving into one of the most engaging storytelling tools we use to think about technology and consider the shape of the future. Along the way, it has also become one of the major lenses we use to explore important philosophical questions. The origins of science fiction are most often thought to trace to Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein, a story born from a night of spooky tale-telling by the fireside that explores scientific, moral, and ethical questions that were of great concern in the 19th century - and that continue to resonate today.

I loved this. I loved this so so much. I love using science fiction stories to explain historical philosophical theories. I feel like they can explain them better than what options were historically used at contemporary times because what we know is not always the same that they expected. It was awesome, I want a lot more of these.
