Harry Truman and Pablo Picasso were contemporaries and were both shaped by and shapers of the great events of the twentieth century—the man who painted Guernica and the man who authorized the use of atomic bombs against civilians. But in most ways, they couldn’t have been more different. Picasso was a communist, and probably the only thing Truman hated more than communists was modern art. Picasso was an indifferent father, a womanizer, and a millionaire. Truman was utterly devoted to his family. How did they come to be shaking hands in front of Picasso’s studio in the south of France?

The life of Emperor Charles V (1500-1558), ruler of Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and much of Italy and Central and South America, has long intrigued biographers. So begins Kaikeyi’s story. The only daughter of the kingdom of Kekaya, she is raised on legends of the gods: how they churned the vast ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, how they vanquish evil and ensure the land of Bharat prospers, and how they offer powerful boons to the devout and the wise. Yet she watches as her father unceremoniously banishes her mother, listens as her own worth is reduced to how great a marriage alliance she can secure. And when she calls upon the gods for help, they never seem to hear.

Founded in London in 1717 as a way of binding men in fellowship, Freemasonry proved so addictive that within two decades it had spread across the globe. Masonic influence became pervasive. Under George Washington, the Craft became a creed for the new American nation. Masonic networks held the British empire together. Under Napoleon, the Craft became a tool of authoritarianism and then a cover for revolutionary conspiracy. Both the Mormon Church and the Sicilian mafia owe their origins to Freemasonry.

For years, there have been whispers that, before his death, Van Gogh completed a final self-portrait. Curators and art historians have savored this rumor, hoping it could illuminate some of the troubled artist's many secrets, but even they have to concede that the missing painting is likely lost forever. But when Luke Perrone, artist and great-grandson of the man who stole the Mona Lisa, and Alexis Verde, daughter of a notorious art thief, discover what may be the missing portrait, they are drawn into a most epic art puzzles.

Description
Includes a bonus PDF with a character chart!
One of the twentieth century’s enduring works, One Hundred Years of Solitude is a widely beloved and acclaimed novel known throughout the world and the ultimate achievement in a Nobel Prize–winning career.
The novel tells the story of the rise and fall of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. Rich and brilliant, it is a chronicle of life, death, and the tragicomedy of humankind. In the beautiful, ridiculous, and tawdry story of the Buendía family, one sees all of humanity, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo, one sees all of Latin America.
Love and lust, war and revolution, riches and poverty, youth and senility, the variety of life, the endlessness of death, the search for peace and truth—these universal themes dominate the novel. Alternately reverential and comical, One Hundred Years of Solitude weaves the political, personal, and spiritual to bring a new consciousness to storytelling. Translated into dozens of languages, this stunning work is no less than an account of the history of the human race.

Be Ready to Work
How to even begin? Marquez's opus is a loops-within-loops, wheels-within-wheels exploration of humanity, soaked in magic realism and buried by layers of history.
Must one do whatever one can to survive? Is family all? Does history condemn you? Are you your parents? If there _is_ more than survival, how does one reach for more when the surrounding world is so completely broken? How far is too far?
Be warned: you must work for this one. Marquez doesn't give you anything for free.

I think the only really bad thing about this book is that you can sometimes tell it was written by the same person to write Love in the Time of Cholera.

Very sophisticated and titillating
Excellent reading of one hundred years of solitude. The narration seems to drag on a little bit as it is quite a lengthy book, but ultimately a very enjoyable version.

Unexpected plot twists filled with magical realism
Loved the magical realism, it alienated me from the wild thoughts and actions of the characters enough to handle all the incest and bestiality. Yet I felt like there was a deeper meaning that I couldn’t grasp. There must be one, seeing as this book is a staple piece in classic literature with a Nobel Winning author. Perhaps I will revisit this title when I am older and wiser, but for now I quite enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot and the ancient ambience of the story. The plot would be easier to track if he didn’t bestow the same names on all of the characters. The performance of the narrator was great and consistent throughout the book.

One of my favourite books
I read this book a few years ago (paperback) and fell in love with the writing.
I suspect that someone listening to it without previously knowing the story would find it difficult to follow, especially because many characters have the same name.
But it is worth it for any one loving literature and classics. It is among my preferred books.
