Story
It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want.

After reading the first book in the series I couldn’t wait to listen to the next. But the Housemaid’s Secret was soooo slow to start. I nearly returned it. Stick with it though and it’ll turn into the novel you expected.

I only try on one of Nina’s pristine white dresses once. Just to see what it’s like. But she soon finds out...and by the time I realize my attic bedroom door only locks from the outside, it’s far too late. But I reassure myself: The Winchesters don’t know who I really am. I don’t usually enjoy stories set in the US but this is an absolute corker. A few friends recommended it and I’m glad I listened. It’s gripping and doesn’t let up for the duration of the novel. Superb!

Story
It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

A truly epic performance. Although adapted for Audible I didn’t feel it lost anything at all. Andrew Garfield’s performance was harrowing but Andrew Scott’s was chilling (he does play these kind of parts worryingly well!). There were some subtly amusing touches such as Martin too.
Will definitely leave you feeling disconcerted.

Recommended by someone at book club, I wasn’t sure what to expect from The List Of Suspicious Things but the performances are superb. I’d recently watched a series of documentaries about the Ripper murders and the fear that was present is women throughout this period is evident in this book.
The warmth as people find each other in this story of the late 1970s (with all the hallmarks of a small town mentality) is like sunshine on a grey day.
Thoroughly recommended.

Story
Maud is an irascible 88-year-old Swedish woman with no family, no friends, and...no qualms about a little murder. Ever since her darling father's untimely death when she was only 18, Maud has lived in the family's spacious apartment in downtown Gothenburg rent-free, thanks to a minor clause in a hastily negotiated contract. That was how Maud learned that good things can come from tragedy. Now in her late 80s, Maud contents herself with traveling the world and surfing the net from the comfort of her father's ancient armchair. It's a solitary existence, and she likes it that way.

Story
E. F. Benson, best known for his irresistible Mapp and Lucia novels set in the fictional town of Tilling, England, was a prolific and beloved novelist. Though the Mapp and Lucia books remain popular to this day, this kindred book will be back in print for the first time since its initial publication. The son of E. W. Benson, archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 to 1896, the young E. F. Benson was educated at Marlborough School and at King's College, Cambridge.

I felt the story was a bit too meandering and not as pithy as the Mapp and Lucia books. The narration was a bit grating after a while although the character performances were good. I had to relisten to certain chapters as I just zoned out a few times. Ok for a freebie.

Story
This Is Going to Hurt was the publishing phenomenon of the century, read by many millions, loved by at least fifty of them, and adapted into a major TV series. But it was only part of the story. By turns hilarious, heartbreaking and humbling, Undoctored is about what happens when a doctor hangs up his scrubs, but medicine refuses to let go of him. Undoctored is Adam Kay's funniest and most moving book yet—an astonishing portrait of a life in and out of medicine, from one of Britain's finest storytellers.

Delivered in Adam’s pithy yet sensitive manner, this book takes you further into events in his life during and post the medical period. It’s thought provoking, humourous and, in some areas, relatable. Includes a conversation with Richard Coles where the medical and ecumenical stances on wellbeing and professional compassion are discussed and mused over. An excellent listen that will stay with you.
