Clearly the topic is an exciting one and the style of writing is impressive. Mr Burton's voice is good to listen to and I was reminded of the character he used to play in the TV series, Star Trek the next generation. Towards the end, Carl spends so much time speculating about alien life without really presenting hard evidence and it really started to feel like SF. I could imagine him having a lot of fun but not found myself indulging him and joining him in his fantasy. The first half was much more engaging by contrast as he presented his ways of seeing scientific facts. At the end, I went away feeling that he moved too far away from facts and that he placed too much faith in science.

Why does it matter who sponsored research?

Professor K takes the trouble of mentioning President Obama and his government for sponsoring some key research projects but hardly mentions any other political personality or entity. This felt like bias to me (I wonder if Prof K is a diehard Democrat?) and started to gnaw at me and ruined the already average quality of writing. He often goes off tangents to explore his own imagination instead of focusing on the science. The book put me off watching any documentary or books by him for good. I stopped listening after about 60%.

it's practical and that is a core strength of this book. Take what you can out of the book and use them to get around the obstacles inherent in one self.

I used to look up to general McArthur with slight unease. now I find admiral Nimitz more to my liking for his humility

Institutional imperative

The book makes the case that the 8 CEOs were able achieve amazing results by not following institutional imperative. I get a sense that CEOs past, present and future often do follow the institutional imperative and I wanted the book to explore that more. Is there a problem with the current practice of selecting and recruiting CEOs? From an evolutionary perspective, ineffective CEOs should have been outcompeted pretty quickly and disappeared but I do not think that is the case. Until that problem is addressed, institutional imperative will be alive and well and shareholder's capital remains at risk.

the book's message is counter intuitive but it points to real situations that many of us can recognise. it is also very practical and rational.
