Wonderful Series
Reviewed: 28-06-24
I am loving this series and very much looking forward to the next instalment. I’m sure I’ll click on the Buy Now button before I’ve even read the blurb. I know a few of the reviewers haven’t liked all the ecclesiastical detail but - horses for courses - and I love getting immersed in it. The characters are so well observed and brought to life, but I have to say that I think Daniel is worthy of someone with more about him than Neil, who seems a bit wishy washy to me (….just saying). I really appreciate the stories being read by Richard himself - he has the most wonderful storytellers voice. He’d be brilliant on Jackanory if it was still around today. I also love their 1980s setting - which takes me back to my student days when I saw Richard at Rock City in Nottingham when he was part of the Communards. Happy days!

Story
It's been a few months since murder tore apart the community of Champton apart. As Canon Daniel Clement tries to steady his flock, the parish is joined with Upper and Lower Badsaddle, bringing a new tide of unwanted change. But church politics soon become the least of Daniel's problems. His mother - headstrong, fearless Audrey - is obviously up to something, something she is determined to keep from him. And she is not the only one.

Wonderful Second Instalment in this Series

Absolutely loved this audiobook especially as it was read by the author. I really hope there will be more and I’m guessing there will be because we were left with a bit of a What????? ending. The characters became a bit more rounded in this story compared to the first one when we were just getting to know them and I know that some people found all the C of E references a bit distracting but I love it all. I hope you’re already working on number 3 Richard.

Is Alice here? Did she make it? Is she safe? In the chaos, in the night, it was impossible to say which of the four had asked after Alice's welfare. Later, when everything got worse, each would insist it had been them. Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side.

Spoiled by narrator

The plot sounded good from the blurb, but just couldn’t get into it because of irritating, one dimensional narration. Sounded like he was reading a shopping list. Couldn’t finish it I’m afraid so can’t tell you if plot got going as the book went on. Disappointed.

Never really got going
Reviewed: 03-12-17
This story was just very slow to get going and never really got off the ground for me I’m afraid. The plot twists were all clearly signposted and I was waiting for another one at the end, but it never came. Not one of my favourite listens.

Had to listen!

Looking back on it, this is maybe a bit of a far fetched tale with a few too many coincidences. It is however a cracking good story with excellent narration and plenty of twists. Listened at every opportunity and finished it all too soon. Will definitely look out for this author again.

Not the best but still good
Reviewed: 12-11-17
I’m a huge fan of the Ruth Galloway series and this one was a good listen as usual, but i just though it was a bit far fetched. The new narrator took a bit of getting used to; the northern accents were a bit too “ee by gum” for my taste, but I did like the new Cathbad.

Intense but no twist

An intense story and well observed relationships, but was expecting a twist at the end and there wasn’t one. Enjoyed the performance and would definitely look out for other books read by the same narrator.

Absorbing, but.....
Reviewed: 24-10-17
I am a big fan of the Tom Douglas novels and of Lisa Coleman’s narration and this was another absorbing case which drew me in. The reason for only four stars is that I felt the “twist” at the end was a little too signposted for me. I found myself waiting for it to be revealed. Good listen however.
