Story
Mars. The red planet. A new frontier for humanity: a civilisation where humans can live in peace, lord and master of all they survey. But this isn't Space City from those old science-fiction books. It's more like Hell City, built into and from a huge crater. There's a big silk canopy over it, feeding out atmosphere as we generate it, little by little, because we can't breathe the air here. I guess it's a perfect place to live, if you want to live on Mars. At some point I must have wanted to live on Mars, because here I am.

If you liked the first book in the series then you’ll enjoy this too. If you were ambivalent then maybe find something new instead.

Story
Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he's called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he is surprised at first to see that the victim appears to be a rather typical techie. But on closer inspection, he finds the victim is over seven feet tall. And even though he doesn't look a day over thirty, he is actually ninety years old. Clearly, he is a Titan - one of this dystopian, near-future society's genetically altered elites.

Clever and interesting gumshoe with a twist

Very interesting world. Great characters and a solid protagonist with whom to form a connection. Perfect performance from the narrator, although I ran it at 1.5x speed. Humour sprinkled throughout but not jokey. Recommend.

Non-derivative but completely canon sequel in a great hard science fiction trilogy. Could be read in isolation but better enjoyed in sequence.

I’m a huge fan of Frankie but had no idea what to expect. I was not really expecting such an emotional rollercoaster of hilarity and pain. If you’re on the fence about this one take the plunge I bet it will pay off.

Enjoyable and fun although many themes are borrowed or feel like they are. Bit annoying at the beginning but got interesting enough soon enough to keep going, which was good as the story is rewarding. The performance is excellent.

Story
Shaw had a breakdown, but he's getting himself back together. He has a single room, a job on a decaying London barge and an on-off affair with a doctor's daughter called Victoria, who claims to have seen her first corpse at age 13. It's not ideal, but it's a life. Or it would be if Shaw hadn't got himself involved in a conspiracy theory that, on dark nights by the river, seems less and less theoretical....

Peculiar, disturbing story, but well written
Reviewed: 24-08-21
The prose of the book is excellent and stimulating, leading you ever more into the story and seeking answers. It is nothing like anything else I have read. Ultimately, I found it wanting at the end, although I see that is perhaps, the purpose of the author.

Classic pulp horror

Follows James usual style and delivers an interesting story to which you want to see the conclusion. Not as good as some of his other books, in my opinion, and felt a little more contrived than usual, but fans will enjoy it and others looking for an easy, somewhat titillating story will too.
