Story
Stanley Kubrick, the director of a string of timeless movies from Lolita and Dr. Strangelove to A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, and others, has always been depicted by the media as the Howard Hughes of filmmakers, a weird artist obsessed with his work and privacy to the point of madness. But who was he really?

Story
Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn.

A very interesting history of the trial told from a legal point of view mostly.
It is a little dry, especially at the beginning but rewards the listener if they stick with it.

In July 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins piloted the Apollo 11 spacecraft to the moon. Fifty years later, it is still one of the greatest achievements in human history. In this remarkable memoir, a defining classic, Michael Collins conveys, in a very personal way, the drama, beauty, and humour of that adventure.

Story
For more than 40 years, the US government has researched extrasensory perception, using it in attempts to locate hostages, fugitives, secret bases, and downed fighter jets, to divine other nations' secrets, and even to predict future threats to national security. The intelligence agencies and military services involved include CIA, DIA, NSA, DEA, the Navy, Air Force, and Army - and even the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Now, for the first time, New York Times best-selling author Annie Jacobsen tells the story of these radical, controversial programs.

Or, good in parts, as the saying goes.
Firstly, credit should be given to the author for extensive research and illuminating an esoteric subject. The book is generally well written too.
But, there are a number of problems. In common with her other audiobooks where she is the narrator her pronunciation of many names, places and even some fairly common English words is mangled and ear - grating. I'm never sure what the cause of this is, but a little practise might help.
Then, there are some errors of fact which are obvious even while listening. Along with this and again in common with her other works is a fairly extensive padding of content. I would estimate that of the approximately 17 hours of this book a good 3 or 4 is content not pertinent to the subject of US government research into the topic.
My most serious criticism though is the way the author presents some material as fact when the incidents she described have been described differently in the literature or can easily be explained in another way.
For example, the Swann experiments at SRI were deemed to be the result of equipment malfunction at the time by some of the participants and this is not mentioned. Also, her image test with Geller is presented as inexplicable and yet can really be explained with a little thought. The idea that "nobody on earth has explained Geller's powers" is nonsense and indeed she seems to have been bamboozled by this character.
So, as I say good in parts.

Discover the definitive history of DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, in this Pulitzer Prize finalist from the author of the New York Times best seller Area 51. No one has ever written the history of the Defense Department's most secret, most powerful, and most controversial military science R&D agency. In the first-ever history about the organization, New York Times best-selling author Annie Jacobsen draws on inside sources, exclusive interviews, private documents, and declassified memos to paint a picture of DARPA, or "the Pentagon's brain".

Interesting, Reading Could Be Better
Reviewed: 18-05-19
This is an interesting listen and reveals many details of this agency and its activities that are fascinating. A lot of research must have been carried out to produce it and that is to be applauded. The writing is also very professional.
The only detriment for me is Ms. Jacobsen's reading of her book. She has an odd, almost declamatory breathless style which I found detracted from the content. Further, some of her mangled pronunciations are very weird, e.g:
"Eggeena" for Agena
"Maykong" for Mekong
"NO rad" for "NORAD
"Psykorsky" for Sikorsky
"Beemeurs" for "BEMEWS"
"Onrico" for Enrico
I wondered if this was because of her provenance, or simply affected? I'm not sure, but these terms and their pronunciation are well-known so it does seem odd.
Overall, a good book, but would be better read by a professional narrator (like her other audiobooks in fact).

Story
For decades, books about John or Robert Kennedy have woven either a shimmering tale of Camelot gallantry or a tawdry story of runaway ambition and reckless personal behavior. But the real story of the Kennedys in the 1960s has long been submerged - until now. In Brothers: The Hidden History of the Kennedy Years, David Talbot sheds a dramatic new light on the tumultuous inner life of the Kennedy presidency and its stunning aftermath. Talbot has written a gripping political history.

Interesting History and Speculation
Reviewed: 12-09-18
This is an interesting book and well worth a listen for those interested in the Kennedys or the period.
I do feel it was let down a little by the narrator who, though OK, was a little unmodulated for me and did not give enough variation in his reading. I also found his reproduction of the accents of JFK and RFK to verge into the imitative and irritating.
My main take from the book (probably unintentionally on the author's part) was that JFK was quite a vacillator and this might explain why he did not achieve all that much (legislatively) during his presidency.
I would buy another of this author's books and I see Audible have a copy of one concerning Allen Dulles and the CIA.

Story
Upon assuming the presidency in 1953, Dwight Eisenhower came to be seen by many as a doddering lightweight. Yet behind the bland smile and apparent simplemindedness was a brilliant, intellectual tactician. As Evan Thomas reveals in his provocative examination of Ike's White House years, Eisenhower was a master of calculated duplicity. As with his bridge and poker games he was eventually forced to stop playing, Ike could be patient and ruthless in the con, and generous and expedient in his partnerships.

This is an interesting and informative history, a little on the gossipy side, but no worse for that.
It's the aural equivalent of a "page-turner" I found and held my interest throughout. The narrator is good and carries the book forward very well.

Outstanding!

I received this title on a 2 for 1 offer and I am so glad I chose it.
These are a series of excellent science fiction stories, which encompass many different nuances of the genre: space adventure, the technological, the philosophical, and so on. Not only are the stories wonderful classics and frequently thought-provoking, they are also uniformly very well read. In an anthology of nearly twenty nine hours a single narrator's voice might have become wearisome, but here there is a different narrator for each story and so something fresh is brought to each one. The readings are excellent.
I think if you have a passing interest in science fiction, you won't be disappointed in this release.
One of my favourite Audible purchases!

Story
In the summer of 1993, Thomas Harding travelled to Germany with his grandmother to visit a house by a lake. It had been a holiday home for her family, that she had been forced to leave as the Nazis swept to power. As he began to piece together the lives of the five families who had lived, he realised that this house had witnessed violence, betrayals and murders, had withstood the trauma of a world war and the dividing of a nation.

A fantastic book and very well read.
The use of the house to tell its residents ' and Germany' s history is inspired.
The book reminds me a little of Len Deighton's "Winter" as a chronicle of German history through the experiences of families.
Most recommended.
