As a long time player and collector of Dark Angel space marines I couldn’t resist listening to this title as I painted the model of the primarch himself. Great story, really well performed with a sequence of multiple voices that must have been a big challenge. With both a level of nostalgia and excitement I look forward to more stories of the lions acceptance back into the imperial fold and that’s not me buying more models to make a risen army honest :)

Pictures in the mind
Reviewed: 04-10-22
As someone who has quite debilitating dyslexia comics saved me as a child. In my teens the eclectic and unusual covers by Dave mkean of the sandman got me to look and I was hooked. I would evangelise the stories to my friends and when the trades came out everyone of my friends got a copy from me. I followed Dirk’s work for years as radio plays such as HHGTTG were the pictures in my mind that comics were in my hands so when I heard Neil and Dirk were working together on this project I thought it was an obvious team up.
The performances are amazing, I’ve re-read the comics since act one and I hear the voices of the actors as I read. I like the tv show and approve and enjoy the changes made to the story. But I will always come back to the comic books and this amazing audio series.

Story
In the polluted, sprawling hive cities of Necromunda, life is short. From the decadent heights of the Spire to the murderous deeps of the underhive, those on the climb must be bold and brutal, or face a violent end. When the barbarous Fettnir, Goliath overlord of the Chemfall Butchers, turns his attention to Escher territory, the result is nothing short of a massacre. Brielle of the Wild Hydras escapes the slaughter and is cast into the deepest levels of the underhive.

Annoying earworm

Overall the story is good and it’s nice to have some background material for House Escher. The performance is good except the drawling accent was almost painfully slow I’m not sure if the narrator was actually “doing an accent” but I felt the need to increase the playback speed to just have a little pace which I would expect from a gang warfare story. My biggest bugbear with the entire piece is the name given to the metal walkways commonly found in industrial environs. I’m not sure if it is the fault of the author or the narrator but I’ve always known them as “gantries” but every mention of this mechanism in this title is “gangtry” I know it’s not a common pronunciation in the game or world of necromunda so it annoyed me and took me out of the story somewhat. :(

Pretty much the only thing that lets this recording down, but down hard for me is that there are a number of instances where a post recording edit has been made and patched in from an echoing other sound recording. This basically took me out of the story as I spent a few seconds thinking “that sounds weird?” And it made me miss some of what was said and I had to skip back and listen again. Quite disruptive :(

Lying northeast of Massachusetts, just south of Hell, Arkham County is somewhere you find yourself, not somewhere you ever mean to go. Once you do find it though, you'd better get used to living there, as you may be there for however long you have left to live.

Too many sounds?
Reviewed: 17-10-21
My main problem with this is that there is little definition of what is happening in the complex sound scapes. There are so many cacophonic sounds clashing together that my brain couldnt keep up. Normally I’m a fan of cthonic horror but there a large spaces in this that in a visual media would help to define. Reminds me of my weird childhood where I would record tv programmes onto cassette tape (before video) and have to remember what happened in places with sound effects and music. It would have benefited from some kind of narration.

Magg-nificant listening
Reviewed: 03-08-21
Take an absolute classic from my youth, hire a man who has created the sound of my radio listening obsession with mr Adams work, then throw an amazing cast of actors at it get the author to narrate it and craft some amazing sound design of effects and music and you get an almost perfect listening treat. Only let down by the fact that this is only part one! Really looking forward to part two. Well done to all involved but especially mr Maggs and Gaiman. Highly recommend this and have shared it with many friends, ironically the same thing I did with my dog eared copy of preludes… must ask for that back… ;)

Editing mishaps
Reviewed: 17-05-19
This is an evocative story in the timeline of the “current” history of the Warhammer 40000 universe. Guy Haley’s turn of phrase and pace makes me want to get to the tabletop and recreate some of this conflict. My only detraction from this epic performance by Mr Banks is that the editorial team have left in several “takes” on the way lines are delivered and as much as this is an interesting insight into the way audiobooks are made it sows a little confusion and detracts from the overall enjoyment of a really good book.
