Story
The City Watch needs men! But what it's got includes Corporal Carrot (technically a dwarf), Lance-Constable Cuddy (really a dwarf), Lance-Constable Detritus (a troll), Lance-Constable Angua (a woman...most of the time) and Corporal Nobbs (disqualified from the human race for shoving). And they need all the help they can get, because someone in Ankh-Morpork has been getting dangerous ideas - about crowns and legendary swords and destiny.

Interesting start to a series
Reviewed: 06-02-24
I enjoyed this book much more than I possibly expected. I don't usually read romance stories (and possibly because of this, I was taken a bit by surprise just how horny the story is!) but I've heard good things about T.Kingfisher and their fantasy writing so wanted to try them out. It was definitely worth it.
The characters were intriguing and the world building was excellent (this was my first book by T.Kingfisher so I'm not sure if the world is shared with any of her other book series). There's plenty of the secondary or tertiary characters that I'd like to hear more about in later books as well as the city state politics and the inter-temple rivalries. The romance plot line was definitely front and centre in the story, possibly to the detriment of the two other plots that interwove with it. I'd have liked those plotlines to have had a bit more page time but they're ingesting none the less.
I'm still undecided on the performance. The delivery matched for one of the protagonists very well and fitted their side of the story, but it left the rest very flat and almost monotone. I think I'm just tipping in favour of giving them the benefit of the doubt in what they were going for.
Altogether, definitely recommended :)

Great supernatural romance mystery

The story of a woman trapped between life and death due to a glitch in existence. I'm not generally a fan of romance stories but these characters really grew on me during this book and the slow reveals of the nature of the glitch kept me intrigued as to how the story would play out. Very well read by the narrator too. She has a great voice, emoted well and was really good at distinguishing the characters.

Early Pratchett is still excellent
Reviewed: 10-09-23
This is a great adaptation of one of Terry Pratchett's early Discworld novels. Jason Isaacs is excellent delivering the story with a great variety of character accents and voices (apart from a couple of dubious troll's anyway). The story is one I've loved since I first read it back in the 90's, with so many pastiches of Golden Age Hollywood that still amuse me now. But, compared with Pratchetts later books, the story is simpler and just doesn't have the same kind of depth. Which is entirely to be expected and feels a bit mean to rate it down for but I have to be honest here :)

Story
Women belong in the kitchen - everyone knows that. Not in jobs, pubs or indeed trousers, and certainly not on the front line. Nonetheless, Polly Perks has to become a boy in a hurry if she wants to find her missing brother in the army. Cutting off her hair and wearing the trousers is easy. Learning to fart and belch in public and walk like an ape takes more time. There's a war on. There's always a war on, and Polly and her fellow raw recruits are suddenly in the thick of it. All they have on their side is the most artful sergeant in the army and a vampire with a lust for coffee.

Not his best but still very good
Reviewed: 23-02-23
Maskerade isn't my favourite of the Witches books but it is still very good, pretty much anything by Terry Pratchett is (in my opinion at least). Maybe it tries too hard to parody opera and the story and some of the characterisation suffers for this or it could just be me. Try it anyway and see what you think ;)
Indira Varma is, once again, perfect as the narrator and voices the characters excellently.

pitch perfect
Reviewed: 09-05-22
I've loved this book ever since I first read it in paperback, many years ago. This audio adaptation is damn near perfect. Indira Varma is excellent as narrator and brings out each characters personality, particularly the 3 witches, wonderfully with careful shifts of tone, accent and nuance. The footnotes will take a little getting used too, as well as Bill Nighy's delivery of them but it's great to have them included. Death will always sound like Christopher Lee (from the animated series) to me but Peter Serafinowicz does an excellent job and I can't wait to hear him with more dialogue to work with in the Death series when they're released. All in all though, damn near perfect.
