A slow grim story

Jumps around a lot in time and character which makes it difficult to follow as an audiobook, especially at the start. Long passages depicting drug abuse in graphic detail which whilst I'm sure were accurate were very tough to get through. Probably the point but it did mean I had to come back to the book multiple times to persevere through. I enjoyed the links between the characters evolving through the book. I was hoping for less uppity spoilt self involved characters and no one was particularly likable so it was a challenge to finish.
I suppose it does give a lot to unpick, but it wasn't an enjoyable read and I wouldn't recommend it unless you love sitting in deep states of discomfort intermittently until you finish this book.

Story
A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro's beautiful and haunting evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House. In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the countryside – and into his past.

unexciting, but a couple of interesting points

A struggle to get through, I probably only managed because it was an audio book! Some interesting ideas, the main one I took away is it may be similar to how life is experience by someone with undiagnosed autism. The main character really struggled with emotional responses, but this may be down to his very closed view of how a "butler" should behave.
I enjoyed the side stories of the politics and history going on in the house but found the rest of it frustrating, slow, and dull. The main character never really had any epiphanies despite ample opportunity, but again this may be related to his inability to see outside the box. Really enjoyed a couple of other books by this author so perhaps this one was just not up my street.

great story

Great story although I feel like the ending was rushed a bit and was a bit empty compared to the thorough character building and storyline throughout the book.
As an English speaker reading the book in audio format I struggled a little bit with keeping track of all the German names.
Would definitely recommend this book.
