It had all the makings in the intro of a story I would normally give the pre-verbal body swerve to as I’m partial to a bit of action which is lacking in this particular story. However it more than makes up for its no-guns, no action by the engaging well written story and narration with its neurodivergent main character . In a word it’s a breath of fresh air, so looking forward to the next one.

Cameron Curtis can write, that’s for sure, though there were a few things that I felt uncomfortable with. That aside the first 1/3 of the book was pretty solid will excellent narration that really pushed the narrative along. It was the perfect voice for this story. All in all a big recommend from me. It reminded me in some ways of No Country for Old Men… which I suppose is no bad thing.

I’ve listed to a number of the books in this series and this one to my mind was pretty mediocre. Too much repetition.

It started okish and then suddenly with scant explanation …….there we were in a fantasy world of DD minus the dragons, so far. The repetitive nature of the story., the main character receiving beating after beating along with the terrible narration finally got to me. The regular voice of the narrator is fine but the accents are worse than awful. Why base a story in The Newcastle area and have a narrator who can’t do the accents is beyond me. Overall rather cringeworthy.

I have to say I like Robert White a lot and this story sure delivers though the finale in my opinion is a wee bit weak if Im too be hyper critical. Love the characters he has put together though the narrator really needs to brush up on his Glasgow accents, as at times it's difficult to tell who exactly is speaking. As Des is a central character I think a bit more effort is really required to at least make it sound a wee bit Scottish! Apart from that a cracking story.

Robert White is an interesting writer with a n interesting style. It's a tale that rolls along at a good pace though I found the ending a bit too abrupt. Apart from that very minor detail its one not to miss especially as its in the Plus catalogue.

It’s all in all a pretty good Grey Man offering apart from the narrator’s inability with accents! English, Scottish and now South African are beyond him, he just can’t do them! If you like the Grey Man’s other books then you’ll like this, possibly apart from the accents !

Ok it's a Grey Man book and to a point it does deliver what you have come to expect. While Jay Snyder is normally ok, in this book its cringe after cringe. Why? He just cant do UK accents. While his English accents leave much to be desired his Scottish ones, I am Scottish, are just so bad, as is his pronunciations of place names with Oban being a particular ear shrieker. Come on Jay some basic research beforehand would not have gone amis. I live in Edinburgh and the author could have at least done a wee bit more research, which makes me question the parts of the world he writes about that I know nothing about. OK it is fiction but come on lets get the basics right if the story is set in the real world. All in all a reasonable book almost spoilt by sloppiness on the part of both writer and Narrator.

It’s a bit of a Boys Own type yarn about a Jarl who can do no wrong. Don’t expect historical accuracy or a storyline craftily woven with deeply drawn characters. It’s just not kind of book. It’s more predictable rooting tooting fun that’s worth a listen.
