Summary
Professor Fiona Cameron is a psychologist who uses computer technology to track serial offenders. She vowed never to work for the Met again after they went against her advice and screwed up an investigation as a result.
But when her lover, thriller writer Kit Martin, tells her a fellow crime novelist has been murdered, Fiona can’t help taking an interest. With the killer striking again, Fiona is caught in a race against time.

Spoiled by the cringy male voices
I couldn't get past the awful put-on voices for the male characters. would have been much better with just a straight read

Predictable
I have read several books by Val McDermid, but if this had been the first, I probably wouldn’t read anything else by her. It was okay but not great…. Hence 3 stars. But previous books have been great.
The main characters are all stupid and always make the assumption that if someone they trust says something then that must be completely correct. E.g. they told me the police had caught the murderer, even though he sounds like the wrong guy, but they wouldn’t get it wrong so it must all be fine now. When the unknown police officer tells them something, they question it.
The story itself seemed rather self-indulgent, but maybe it would have been okay if I wasn’t already getting frustrated with the characters. I guess writing about what you know about is normally a good thing.
I’d still read more by Val McDermid, but if it is as meh as this one, it’ll be the last.

Very good
I really enjoyed this story although I feel that this could have been two books. The part set in Toledo could have been a book of its own and didn't really lend anything to the main story. Having said that, it is a very good story with a gripping climax.

A thoroughly gripping story from the outset. Characters were completely believable. The narration was great.

Had me hooked from the start
Narration is absolutely brilliant and the story is excellent. Twists and turns along the way keep you absolutely gripped.

Performance put me to sleep
Really enjoyed the story but I had the hardest time getting through this book, the performers voice put me to sleep like no other! For how intense the book was, the performance was too relaxed and monotone.

Kept me guessing
A fabulous Who Done It. I didn't see it coming at all. Very long, but very enjoyable too.

Awful narration
I cannot complete this book after 3 attempts, the narrator is just awful, terrible accents and the whispering is extremely off putting

the number of poor decisions made by intelligent people
I think the apparent political control of police decisions must put them at a disadvantage in comparison to the actual wrongdoers. then the fact that so many of the senior officers were fast tracked with very little understanding of what those on the beat or ordinary detective level deal with on a day to day basis. plus the scramble by many often (according to writers of detective fiction) not really that good at the job but ace at climbing the greasy pole. oh for intelligent senior police officers who can give credit where it's due and who can also say the "buck stops with me".
