Each week, The Baltimore Sun will recognize one high school player from a boys sport and one from a girls sport for their athletic achievements.

Boys sport Athlete of the Week: James Zingo, Archbishop Curley, lacrosse

The senior midfielder was at his versatile best in helping the Friars claim their third straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference championship as they claimed an 18-9 win over Saints Peter & Paul at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday. In addition to scoring a team-high four goals, Zingo teamed with Ryan Comegna to dominate the faceoff X. This season, Zingo had 34 goals, 18 assists, 143 ground balls and won 72% of his faceoffs. Curley avenged two regular-season losses against the Sabres and finished with a 12-7 mark.

Girls sport Athlete of the Week: Ryan Pindell, John Carroll, softball

The junior right fielder hit a first-inning triple and scored the first run to set the tone in the No. 3 Patriots’ 6-3 win over No. 6 Archbishop Spalding in Friday’s Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference championship at Stevenson University. Pindell went 3-for-4 in the game as John Carroll ended the Cavaliers’ string of four straight championships. This season she batted .316 with 12 RBIs with 19 runs scored and stole seven bases. Seeing time in left and center, she had no errors. The title was John Carroll’s second overall and first since 2017.
