UPDATED:

Baltimore County homicide detectives are investigating after “possible human remains” were found Monday at a trash and recycling center in Cockeysville, county police said.

All possible human remains were sent to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and an autopsy is pending, police said later, adding that detectives are trying to determine whether the circumstances that surround the case are criminal in nature.

Officers from the Cockeysville precinct arrived at the Warren Road facility at about 9 a.m. Monday. Trash and recycling from multiple jurisdictions are processed at the center, according to the original Baltimore County Police news release.

The Cockeysville plant houses the county’s single-stream recycling materials recovery facility where workers and machines sort and prepare paper, plastic and metal items. Staff stand along a system of conveyor belts to remove any materials missed by sorting equipment.

The Baltimore County Department of Public Works and Transportation said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the facility would close early Monday. The department’s website said the center is closed until further notice.

“We’re hoping to be back to normal operations tomorrow,” the department wrote on X.
