A chess festival that aims to promote junior involvement in the game takes place later.

ChessFest Hull is part of a wider UK festival and is being held at Princes Quay shopping centre in the city.

The Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber, Mark Collinson, will help open the event.

Mr Collinson said he was pleased to see a "resurgence" of chess in Hull, "particularly among youngsters".

The Lord Mayor is a keen chess player and will compete in the 2024 British Chess Championships, which take place in Hull from 25 July to 4 August.

Chris Matthews, one of the organisers of ChessFest, said: “For the Hull and District Chess Association, it is a great honour to have the Lord Mayor open our event, and hopefully make the first move in our junior consultation game with London.

“He is a great supporter of chess in our area.”

The festival is free to attend and other festivals are also taking place in London’s Trafalgar Square and Chavasse Park in Liverpool.
