Volcanoes on Venus could be active right now

There are volcanoes on Venus! In-fact they are all over the solar-system.

But the ones on Venus could be erupting right now.

Scientists re-studying information recorded by Nasa's Magellan spacecraft have found more evidence of volcanic activity form 30-year old data.

And it suggests that the planet is a lot more geologically active than scientists previously thought.

Are Earth and Venus similar?

The data suggests that the plant could be as geologically active as Earth.

Earth has more than one thousand active volcanoes, with around 50–70 erupting every year at varying strengths.

Scientists have often wondered why Venus, which is a similar size to Earth, and had an equal amount of water billions of years ago, turned into a planet with a hot, hostile and poisonous atmosphere.

Studying Venus' volcanic activity, which could be caused by the planet's internal heat may provide the answers.

Earth and Venus are the most similar two planets

Most of Earth's internal heat is left over from when our planet was formed, about 4.5 billion years ago.

Earth and the other planets in the solar system first began to take shape as countless bits of space rock collided and clumped together.

Energy from those violent collisions transformed into heat energy, which is still present deep within the cores of planets such as Earth and Venus.
