Hotel Sant'Angelo, hotel in Rome

Set on the right bank of Rome's Tiber River, Hotel Sant'Angelo is set in a historic building, just 1 km from the Spanish Steps. It offers free Wi-Fi and en suite rooms.

The hotel is on the small'ish side but quaint on 3 levels with a small elevator or stairs, the staff were very friendly and helpful and you get a kettle and small fridge in the room with tea/coffee / milk ect and both my beds were comfortable enough, just ask the staff on reception for things like extras for the room tea /coffee ect or advice on places to visit and it wasn't a problem , they give you a map on your arrival to show you the area . You are on top of a nice little cafe if you want to start your day off with a coffee and croissant before heading into town which was approximately 15 mins walk over one of the big bridges , and you were on top of the Castile or a bit longer and 30/40 mins and you were near the Vatican/ collasum ect, or a short bus ride if you're not in the mood to walk , there are bus stops nearby and buses that take you all different parts of Rome with a contactless tap system , if you don't feel like walking, so it's very close to all the sights which was convenient and made our stay lovely as I haven't been to Italy since I was a small child.

Rome as a city is a good example of a case where decades of municipal mismanagement and incompetence are not enough to remove the charm of a city. Rome is nice, but could be so much better if, for instance, the city had a mobility policy worthy of the name. Now the city is stuck in the 1980's: cars are allowed to drive almost anywhere and are a complete nuissance, together with ubiquitous mopeds. When I write cars, I also mean cars with a combustion engines, since e-cars (let alone e-mopeds) are an invention that does not seem to have reached Italy yet. The result is a noisy and polluted city. Also the buses drive on diesel and for some reason, timetables do not exist. The only information provided is the frequency of a bus (eg every 15 min) and as a passenger you just have to be lucky you're at the stop at the righ time, as if you are in a developing country. The website of the public transport company also seems to have been created in the 1990's and has not been updated since. For a city where heatwaves are so common, it is also incomprehensible that the city does not invest in planting more trees. Instead they prefer to cover everything in asphalt. Rome is also an incredibly dirty city, even in the posh areas. Again, one gets the impression one is visiting a developing country. When one leaves Rome, the main thought therefore is: 'What if?' - 'What if this city was run by competent people?'

I spent 3 days there and was able to cover most of the historic sites. If you're planning to visit the Coliseum or Vatican City, give yourself plenty of time. I took almost 5 hours in each and still did not compete all of it. The night life looks intriguing. I do plenty to go back to explore that. So many side streets to explore.

We enjoyed organised skip-the-line tours of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Vatican. We enjoyed the Trastevere and Monti areas of Rome and had some beautiful pastas at local restaurants there. Next time, we won’t go to Rome in July as it’s just way too hot.

Rome is beautiful, but too crowded.

Rome is beautiful, but too crowded. There are must-see landmarks and the architecture is out of this world. I have gone there twice now, I think that is enough in a lifetime. It is too hot in the summer. If you are not a fan of pasta or pizza, you will struggle to find something to eat. As usual, I live for the gelato! Amazing, Amazing, Amazing.

We stayed on the Vatican side of the city.

We stayed on the Vatican side of the city. Less congested and lovely restaurants. All the sites are accessible by foot or metro. Lots to do and see. Very busy in July with tourists so go out early to get the best photos. We went to the Vatican, colosseum, Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, and also did a day trip to Naples .. great links from the main train station if you have time.

The staff here has the best customer service I've ever received in my entire life. They welcomed us like we've been long-time friends. They showed us a map of Rome with places to see and eat. This was the first time staying in a "boutique" hotel and was an amazing experience. The rooms were clean and nice with everything in working order. It is walking distance from the Vatican City and an easy bus ride into the busy tourist areas. Check out this hotel if you plan on staying in Rome.
