CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – An Academy Award-winning filmmaker will serve as keynote speaker for an upcoming lecture series in Charleston.

Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Da 5 Bloods) will deliver remarks during the Gibbes Museum of Art’s 2024 Distinguished Lecture Series in October. The event will be held at Charleston Music Hall.

The museum’s announcement follows Lee’s recent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum which offered a rare look into the filmmaker and artists’ personal collection from prominent artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jacob Lawrence, and Elizabeth Catlett.

“In addition to works by top-tier visual artists, photography holds a significant place in Lee’s collection, meriting a dedicated section of the past exhibition to works by Gordon Parks, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, James Van Der Zee, and LaToya Ruby Frazier, among others,” the museum said.

Those attending will have an opportunity to hear from Lee about his large collection, what influences his choices, and the inspirations behind his work.

Early bird tickets will go on sale on August 1, and general public tickets are available on August 19. Prices will range from $50 to $125. The event is October 22 at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the museum is partnering with the Terrace Theater to present three one-night-only screenings of Spike Lee’s most esteemed films: Do the Right Thing on September 12 at 7 p.m., Malcolm X on September 19 at 6 p.m., and BlacKkKlansman on September 26 at 7 p.m.
