CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Storm Team 2 has issued a weather alert for a heat advisory in the Lowcountry, along with an increased risk of severe thunderstorms.

“It’s day number 4 of heat index values above 105 near 110,” says meteorologist Josh Marthers. “Remember heat is a cumulative type of effect on you, it wears you down as it goes on and on…now we’re adding the risk of some strong thunderstorms on top of that.”

Heat alerts are in place throughout the Lowcountry. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s.

Storm Team 2 says the heat index values will climb quickly to near 100 by late morning to between 105 and 110 by early to mid-afternoon.

Marthers says the Lowcountry will remain dry until 2 p.m. Afterward, storms are expected to move through late afternoon and into the evening hours.

“Some of these will be capable of producing wind damage and large hail, tons of lightning as we are going to have a lot of energy in the atmosphere for thunderstorms today,” Marthers added.
