Statistician's Comment

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (09 April 2024) released Fuel Excise Clearances February 2024.

Commenting on the release, Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Climate and Energy Division, said: "Clearances of Unleaded Petrol in February 2024, at 79 million litres, were 5% higher than the February 2023 figure of 75 million litres. After a long period of decline in clearances of Unleaded Petrol from 2007, there has been a gradual recovery in 2022-2024 to 2019 levels (See Figure 1, Table 1B, and Table 2).

At 281 million litres, clearances of Autodiesel in February 2024 were 2% lower than in February 2023 (See Table 1A).

Clearances of Marked Gas Oil in February 2024 were 80 million litres, which was 14% lower than the February 2023 figure of 93 million litres. This decrease followed a 10% increase between January 2023 and January 2024 (See Table 1C). Marked Gas Oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.

At 95 million litres, clearances of Kerosene in February 2024 were 7% lower compared with the February 2023 figure of 102 million litres (See Table 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.

Excise clearances in February 2024 were the lowest February figures for Kerosene since 2012 and for Marked Gas Oil since 2017 (See Tables 1C and 1D).

The monthly mean temperature at Dublin Airport in February 2024 was 7.3 degrees Celsius. This was the highest recorded monthly mean temperature at Dublin Airport for February in the 2000-2024 time series (See Table 4).

Annual clearances of Unleaded Petrol, Marked Gas Oil, and Kerosene in 2023 were all substantially lower than the highest levels recorded in the 2000-2023 time series (See Table 2)."

Editor's Note

The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as Autodiesel and Unleaded Petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes, exceptionally cold weather, and storage capacity (home heating oil tanks) can all combine to create marked variations in the monthly clearances. Levels of activity in the economy and changes in the vehicle fleet composition can affect the volume of clearances of road fuels. See Background Notes for definition of fuel excise clearances.

Tables and Graphs

There was a 12.5% increase in Kerosene excise clearances when comparing the year-to-date period January-February 2024 with January-February 2023. There was an 8.0% increase in Unleaded Petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12-month rolling period of March 2023-February 2024 with March 2022-February 2023 (See Table A, 1B, and 1D).
