Clearances of unleaded petrol in January 2024, at 82 million litres, were 13% higher than the January 2023 figure of 73 million litres (See Figure 1 and Table 1B).
Clearances of autodiesel in January 2024, at 287 million litres, were 4% higher than the January 2023 figure of 275 million litres (See Figure 1 and Table 1A).
Excise clearances of marked gas oil in January 2024 were 10% higher compared with January 2023. This was the highest marked gas oil clearances recorded for January since 2017 (See Figure 1 and Table 1C).
Clearances of kerosene in January 2024 were 32% higher compared with January 2023 (See Figure 1 and Table 1D).
The data used in this statistical release mainly relate to the Revenue Commissioners monthly excise clearance volumes. The use of transport fuels such as autodiesel and unleaded petrol are less seasonal than the use of home heating fuels. Price changes, exceptionally cold weather, and storage capacity (home heating oil tanks) can all combine to create marked variations in the monthly clearances. Levels of activity in the economy and changes in the vehicle fleet composition can affect the volume of clearances of road fuels. See Background Notes for definition of fuel excise clearances.
There was an 8.7% increase in unleaded petrol excise clearances when comparing the 12 month period of February 2023 - January 2024 with February 2022 - January 2023 (See Table A).

In 2000 autodiesel clearances were two billion litres which was 2% higher than unleaded petrol clearances. In 2023 autodiesel clearances had increased to 3.6 billion litres which was 256% higher than unleaded petrol (See Table 2).

Statistician's Comment
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has today (08 March 2024) released Fuel Excise Clearances January 2024.
Commenting on the release Deirdre Moran, Statistician in the Environment and Climate Division, said: "Clearances of unleaded petrol in January 2024 were 82 million litres, which was 13% higher than January 2023 (See Figure 1 and Table 1B).
At 287 million litres, clearances of autodiesel in January 2024 were 4% higher than in January 2023 (See Figure 1 and Table 1A).
Clearances of marked gas oil in January 2024 were 93 million litres, which were 10% higher than in January 2023 (See Figure 1 and Table 1C). Marked gas oil is primarily used for off-road purposes such as agriculture and the heating of larger buildings.
At 133 million litres, clearances of kerosene in January 2024 were 32% higher compared with January 2023 (See Figure 1 and Table 1D). Kerosene is mainly used as a home heating fuel.
Excise clearances in January 2024 were the highest January figures for marked gas oil since 2017, unleaded petrol since 2019, autodiesel since 2020, and kerosene since 2021 (See Figure 1 and Tables 1A to 1D).
Annual clearances of unleaded petrol, marked gas oil, and kerosene in 2023 were all substantially lower than the highest levels recorded in the 2000-2023 time series (see Table 2)."
