You might have noticed an influx of bee swarms in Norfolk this week - and a pest control expert has explained why.

Andrew Dellbridge, owner of Ace Pest Control in Norwich, said there have been more bees around the county due to the sudden increase in temperatures.

Parts of the region have seen highs of 28C and it is not only sunseekers who have been enjoying the hot weather.

"As well as working in pest control I am a beekeeper and have been getting lots of calls about bees this week," he said.

"The bees are going absolutely mad.

"In the spring when temperatures reach around 20C, bees do leave their hives and tend to swarm.

"This year we haven't had that kind of heat until now so the bees are popping out like champagne.

"Some of the hives are very large, too - I was called out in one instance and the hive was so large I struggled to fit it into a box."

He added some of the bees and wasps that are appearing are larger due to how late in the year they are emerging.

"When the queens come out of their hives they're obviously quite big so people are thinking they're hornets or Asian hornets but they aren't - I haven't seen or heard of any positive Asian hornet sightings in Norfolk.

"The real message is that people shouldn't panic and when I get these calls I try to keep calm and advise people.

"The vast majority of things in our gardens - from honeybees to hornets - have been sharing our space for most of our lives and they haven't caused any harm."

Mr Dellbridge also urged people who are worried about large insects to take photos and send them to the authorities for identification.
